Hawaiian shirts which have always retained a devoted following, as documented in The Aloha Shirt: Spirit of the Islands (LJ 12/00) were one of the most obvious symbols of the Islands, but knickknacks of all kinds were bought by this newfound "tourist" trade. The development of air travel created another source of souvenir hunters and thus continued the fascination with all things Polynesian. In the last few years, Schiffer, a firm specializing in guides to antiques and collectibles, has turned out several books on Hawaiiana, and these two are the latest to document this enduring craze. The title of Pfouts's book pretty much tells it all. Look here for images of grass-skirted hula girls (some more naughty than nice) and, in the last 15 pages or so, those stylized idols known as Tiki gods. Pfouts' purpose is clear: It's all about fun. He claims he's not out to teach anyone anything. And then he goes ahead and does it anyway. Hula Dancers offers a great store of information and photos. Pfouts gives a clear picture of how the hula dancer and the tiki god came to symbolize so much to so many. He covers a wide range of Hula collectibles through four sections: flat hula treasures that includes postcards, paintings, pulp art, cocktail napkins, carnival sideshow art, decals, playing cards, tattoos, etc; the three-dimensional section brings the lovely ladies to life as figurines, salt and pepper shakers, plaster sculptures, drinking vessels, killer lamps and more; the vintage crank girls in the third section offer the reader a rare chance to see dainty little ladies who shimmy with a quick twist and the Hollywood section show how movie posters, album covers, photos and sheet music brought the hula into greater public view. The tiki gods portion of the book offers up information and photos on everything tiki, including swizzel sticks, mugs, pendants, bookends and furniture to die for. Combined with his entertaining commentary and assessments on what some of these collectibles are worth today, Hula Dancers and Tiki Gods leaves a lasting impression of the depth and availability of Hawaiiana out there.

Great book - includes everything.I have a lot of kumihimo books. If you are a beginner and want to start quick, this is ideal. HOWEVER... if you are experienced, it is wishlist good because it clearly covers many different styles of braids, and is therefore a great reference book. I recommend getting the paper version. The kindle version is good too, but it's easier to see the illustrations on the paper one. This book actually includes more detail in a shorter space than other books. Excellent.

I don’t like the book for the simple fact that the subtitle “learn how successful organizations use workforce analytics to improve business performance“ leads you to believe the book is something that it is most certainly not: a discussion of individual workforce analytics. There is a section in the middle with case studies that discuss specific workforce analytics. The beginning and ending sections, composing most of the book, are introductory material and implementation tips respectively. Don’t waste your money.

The Power of People pulls together the collective experience of the leaders in this burgeoning field into the ‘must-have’ resource for anyone with an interest in workforce analytics. An “experience of unease” looms over Kadji Amin’s Disturbing Attachments. Amin deidealizes what Queer Studies cherishes about Jean Genet, refuses to idealize those objects and gives voice to his pederastic behavior--that which has tended to be marginalized within Queer Studies. Amin’s display of Genet’s disturbing attachments successfully disturbed my attachments to sex, the erotic and intimacy and will continue to produce disturbance within readers.

Kadji Amin’s, Disturbing Attachments, cuts through offerings, in Queer Theory, of a fantasy driven utopianism of homoerotic relations by dipping toes into a controversial modern pederasty. Amin’s book sits in “attachment” in order to decode its affects on power dynamic play within the state—a queering to social dominance. “Attachment” and “disturbance” is also understood through genealogy and temporality—one recalling the other. Overall, Disturbing Attachments creates a space for pederasty to exist and to move in and out of queer futures.

This book had a good framework but seemed to be working toward a project of appeasing the academics. Well, if they are assigning it and loving it then the goal has been met. However, this text is the typical PhD dissertation turned book for the sake of it kinda book.I am sure the work is brilliant, just not sure if it needed to be written in such a mode.

Amin encourages a critical self-inquiry of queerness and historicity in order to move towards a queer history by suggesting what he terms deidealization and attachment genealogy. These are methodological tools to deflate our attachments to the history of queer pain only as injury. Amin himself does not make value judgements on controversial practices such as modern pederasty. Rather, he creates a demoralized landscape in which we may begin to talk about these practices and analyze their historical origins in order to work through disturbing attachments to histories of hurt. Amin shows readers that by deflating ideals, discomfiting attachments to historical contexts of race and geopolitics, can be revealed.
