I teach printmaking, and have been looking for some time for a solid general reference book for my students. This is the only book I have found that covers all the essential printmaking techniques, is up to date, and offers good examples of contemporary artists' work along with practical step-by-step info. I have many other wonderful books on printmaking but many of them are out of date in terms of health and safety (only covering the traditional solvent based methods), OR only cover new non-toxic methods without offering traditional options also, OR are promoting particular products and therefore more like advertizing. This is the only book that I've found that I feel comfortable giving to my classes. I do wish it wasn't so expensive (as printmaking classes are already expensive enough for students), but with the rental option on Amazon it is affordable for a class text.

This is a solid reference text, with a multitude of print processes covered. The authors explain each step, accompanied by drawn illustrations and images for each process. Very useful to keep on the shelf, especially in a classroom situation.

Full of illustrations, the artist's process and personality, so well written. Entertaining, inspirational, beautifully designed. This is a must-have for anyone interested in typography, logos, lettering, branding and so on. Jon Contino is authentic, a true original, a treasure! You will NOT regret buying this book!

A comprehensive guide to everything printmaking. My professor gave me the heads-up that the UK printing is a much less expensive alternative to the US printing, with the exact same content. I love this book. One of the rare ones I'm keeping after my classes are over with.

The book is extremely well-written, edited and thoughtful. I have a son who plays in AAU year-round and is one of those boys who regularly attends the national camps (EBC, John Lucas etc). The book shines a spotlight on why AAU coaches are so motivated to recruit the best talent for their teams and why they'll go to such great lengths to win. There is big money involved from the shoe companies and other sponsors. If you are a parent of an AAU basketball player you absolutely MUST read this book. Parents are being deceived by coaches and recruiters all the time. Spend $15, buy this book and educate yourself. The book is so well-written that even if you are already an expert and can navigate the murky waters of AAU w/out assistance this book is worth the read for the entertainment value alone.

Obviously, well written, story flows well. Only gripe I have is of the lead character/villain Joe Keller (I often wanted to stop reading because he's such a despicable human being, all in it for his own gain). He is borderline trailer-trash exploiting young, talented kids and their poor, single parent families (which he often times admits to when he's being honest, which isn't often). But he does have some good qualities: he's got the desperation and hunger (because when he literally started, he was basically broke) so he worked extremely hard, networked, constantly marketed himself and his product (his star player and team) and achieved goals he wanted to accomplish. Otherwise, he's a s***ty, know-little coach/leader (indecisive and just informed enough that makes him dangerous). He constantly berates his players and his erratic substitution patterns during games were a mind-jack(I prefer the f-word) and shows how little he knows and his lack of self control. I have no idea how this low life was able to manipulate not only the kids, but also the parents (some who were well-educated and financially well off). I would rate this book 5 stars if it were fiction, but because the real life main character is such a POS human being, I have to settle for 4 stars.

There was a time when the second best avenue to writerly acclaim (the best being investigative journalism) was sports writing, and Dohrmann seems cut from that cloth. He's a Sports Illustrated writer-Pulitzer winner - and, as this book demonstrates, a bit of an investigative writer himself.But a bit about the book.Dohrmann began following what he calls grassroots basketball, i.e., the entrepreneurial AAU system of pre-high school hoops. His main focus is a struggling coach, Joe Keller, and his basketball find, a young California kid named Demetrius Walker.Talk about patience: Dohrmann follows these two and a secondary cast of characters through some eight years, most of it through the kids' seventh and eighth grades. Keller, by Dohrmann's accounting, has a gift for recognizing hoops talent in pubescent boys, but his primary talent is the entrepreneurial one; he ends up rich from basketball camps and all its ancillary product and activities, leaving his boys to struggle toward high school and college.Dohrmann's main point here is that boys from less than desirable home lives are ending up as the means to the entrepreneurial end in hopes of rescue through making it to the NBA. As a result, they aren't coached well, aren't developed as pre-adults, and the sins of the coaches and other wheeler-dealers haunt these kids throughout their sports lives.While Dohrmann's writing voice is rock solid, it doesn't approach Grantland Rice's elegance. However, he clearly knows how to take volumes of data about these coaches, the boys and their families, and write it without it seeming an amorphous mass of data. Where possible he lets his characters talk through dialogue; as a result, you're drawn deeply into their lives, their sports journey, their trials and successes. When he resorts to backstory, he does so in a way that embellishes his the here-and-now, and he doesn't linger there long enough to lose the reader.In such an eight-year odyssey, and with the amount of detail at Dohrmann's disposal, it would be tempting to let one's self drift away from this story's arc, but Dohrmann's a disciplined enough writer to make such an ambitious project work. If his writing here has a downside, it's a minor one: he lingers too long over somewhat trivial matters near the end. But for tomorrow's hoops stars, today's fans, and this aging hoopster, it's an enthralling must-read.

One of the best books on basketball I have ever read, the scope of the book is staggering in its breadth and detail. Journey with the author and the star of the book for over a decade, through every corner of the prep basketball industry. This book immerses itself, and the reader, into the world of a young sports prodigy, showing how being anointed a franchise player too soon can change an athlete's life - for better or worse. It is a classic - Tyreke Evans and Russel Westbrook cameo.

AAU ball is a trip I played for a Reebok sponsored team called The TCAA Monroe Bulldogs in Monroe, Louisiana. We got a limited amount of tshirts , shorts and socks etc . Our coach had a different agenda he would sell shoes headbands and everything that he could sell that was Reebok. That was the Summer of 2000. It was a 16u team, we made it to nationals in Detroit. I heard some of this stories from other teams when we stayed in hotels. This was a great book.

Just the tip of the iceberg. George Dohrmann, an award winnng Sports Illustrated senior writer, does a great job of exposing the underbelly of youth basketball. You have to feel for the kids who become pawns for the power brokers tied to shoe company grassroots promotion money and major alumni benefactors "donations" to the tax exempt "foundations" of these same AAU coaches and organizations. Pretty naive to believe that all these elite athletes are going to play at the college level for only scholarships covering tuition, room and board, and a small stipend after coming up through organizations where they received gifts, clothing, cars,phones, and spending money, and maybe their mom's rent paid for by their AAU coaches and/or their AAU coaches agent buddies. Sad commentary on how the whole "high level" youth basketball industry - and that is what it is - an industry - has evolved on the backs of kids with dreams of making it in the NBA.

This is a book of photos, with an erudite and informative introduction by John Julius Norwich and various literary quotations thoughout--beautifully produced, elegant for any coffee table. The fact that all the photos are black and white is fine, because most of the views are so familiar that the lack of color gives them a different aspect from the usual London picture book. However, the photos tend to be a bit murky and clouded looking, often lacking sharp contrast that would bring out their drama. Also, one has to check the listing in the back of the book to find out the name of the building or the park in each photo--an artistic choice but inconvenient for the reader. It's a lovely book but just a bit disappointing.

This is a fine guide to Texas. We used it a lot during our road trip from Corpus Christie to El Paso. We liked the fact that even us old timers could read the print as well as get good information. Also very interesting tidbits about the areas. We especially liked the Big Bend section. Keep up the good work.

I like this book but it is not as extensive as I had hoped for so I gave it only 4 stars.

I paid 99 cents for this book and I overpaid by 98 cents. This book is meant mostly for 19 and 20 year olds who are trying to figure out how to make some summer money from their drawings. I wish I was joking, but a vast amount of the advice was things like, “Hold a bake sale”, “Hold a pancake breakfast” and “I know, you could hold a raffle!”. I wish I were joking. This book is not meant for those serious about actually learning real ways to fund an actual business.

This is an interesting read. I don't think it's for me because I'm an aspiring entrepreneur & I'm a fashion blogger.

Succinct, straightforward, inspiring, valuable, - I was not prepared to do a proper review but to get my kindle to show 100 percent read I had to complete this

Need to raise money for your art or non-profit? Consider this book a a toolbox of out-of-the-box ideas. Carey's well-organized, simply presented, and super clearly written book demystifies fundraising for any project or idea. He encourages readers to peruse the ideas (you can read through them all in under 30 minutes), to pick one, and to get going. For artists, these ideas aren't necessarily intended to contribute to your fame or grow your career directly so much as to enable you to generate the necessary funds it takes to keep the boat afloat. For example, in chapter one "Create A Product," Carey holds up the founders of Air BnB, who'd run out of cash while courting investors; they dreamed up a limited-edition poetically themed cereal brand, ingeniously promoted it, and promptly sold out to rase $40G's. The other ideas in the first half of the book are staging a fundraising auction, throwing a "feast of ideas" dinner, or starting your own festival, selling products with your designs, and using "texting-to-give" to greatly increase spontaneous giving at your events. All that's just in the first half, but this should give you a flavor of Carey's outside-the-ordinary funding ideas.

Need to do some fundraising? Check out this book of surprising and easy ideas to get yourself started. Carey gives examples of strategies for raising funds that have worked for others (AirBnB!!) and encourages you to think creatively (FEASTs??!!). Best of all, after an inspiring and informative explanation of each idea, he gives you a step by step checklist for planning your own event! Yes- a checklist for each idea! Very useful AND user friendly (I have the eBook). Highly recommended (even if you don't need to do a fundraiser right now it has some very cool ideas!)

Brainard Carey’s advice, if you follow it, is helpful and concise. He offers tips and tricks that are both thought provoking and actionable. I suggest investing in this “how to” Bible for creatives!

The book is well organized and the information is presented concisely. Full of interesting ideas, some of which are more suited to larger enterprises that just individual creative artists such as Chapters 2 Mounting an auction or 4 Texting for donations. Chapters 1 Creating a product and 5 Fundraising by design certainly have applicability for the individual artist.On the whole the book emphasizes developing organizational skills and reaching out to the public as a means to secure funding. A good short read and reference volume.

Brainard Carey never ceases to impress with his creativity, enthusiasm, and passion for original fundraising. “Fund Your Dreams like a Creative Genius,” is part "how to" and part workbook. He offers some ideas which I have never heard before, Glasgow Open House, a variation on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival . It's a healthy kick to getting ahead with your creative projects. Definitely worth the time.

This is my 3rd or 4th time reading this series over the last couple of years. Some people might consider this extreme.I consider it an outstanding privileges to be so entertained each and every time. I usually don't indulge in readinganything more than once but, this series is an exception to any rule. The characters never seem to bore me but,just the opposite, I discover new things about them I might have missed during the previous visits through thepages that somehow keep me coming back. I do and have recommended this series to anyone looking for an adventure among the mystical and mythicalmonsters, heroes and villains these books so vividly have to offer. I can't be sure I'd read them a fifth time but, then again, I wouldn't bet a penny I wouldn't.Thanks again for the great story telling!

Stephenie Meyers wrote the series to be about the obsession of first love and targeted primarily at mid teen girls and the first two books of the series are weaker for it in my opinion. Bella is a blank slate character who doesn't begin to really fill out personality-wise really until this third book. In many ways she comes off as cold and callous in the first book because her mind is really only focused upon Edwards flawless face. It is not until the end of the book where she she is shown to be selfless in trying to protect her family. The same could be said in the second book except it remains to be all about Edward and a bit of Jacob where nothing else really matters and everyone else is secondary. It is in this third chapter of the series that we see her world expand more and we are given a bit more interaction with others not named Edward or Jacob. She shown to have fear a concern not just in passing but consistently for those around her. This I feel adds more deapth actually to the relationship between her and Edward. It is in this where we see the Love Story go beyond someone's flawless perfection or unreadable mind. We get to see the person instead of the blank slate. it is worth noting that when this book came out the series was really taking off and becoming a national craze. not only had the character of Bella growing older but so had the original readers. I think that is why the story is a bit more mature if still appropriate for the original core audience as it will remain throughout series for the most part. It may sound weird but it's very much like the shift that occurred in the Harry Potter series where it went from being aimed at a younger audience to growing up and becoming more mature as the audience and characters group. The promise of action and danger along with a mystery makes a story more compelling so that the romance is not the sole thing holding the story up. The love triangle that was commercialized to an extreme is shown not to be as in depth or prevalent in the story itself. it's there and there is angst but there's never really anything to it. If Edward and Bella is about the obsession of first love in Jacob and Bella is about the line between loving a friend too much to let go.For those on the fence of reading the book series I would say to do so simply to know what you're talkin about if it ever comes up in conversation. In truth it is not a bad story but it is one directed toward a certain audience and readers outside of the audience have to accept that.In the end I do think it comes down to the readers taste of what kind of character they want. Authors can either make the main character have a personality that is impactful and memorable or have one that is easier to slip into because there's nothing there but an outline for the reader to fill out themselves. I believe that those who dislike the series do so because they did not want a blank slate character but one that reached out to grab the reader's attention and pulled them along the story. perhaps this is why I enjoy the last two books more than the first two because the author has filled out the outline more so that Bella feels more like a complete character.This book contains no strong language or Gore. It is a fairly clean story with the romantics limited to kissing passionately.

Girl gets boy back, then defies him to hold hands and snuggle up with a “friend” who wants to break them up.As this series progresses, I like each book a little less than the one before. Only the amusing narration, bickering, and jibes; Alice’s child-like glee; and the more serious and intriguing developments with Victoria and the Volturi kept me reading.I thought Bella had made her choice in “New Moon.” I didn’t expect to see her conflicted in “Eclipse.” She got her prince, her angel, back, and now she’s having second thoughts about the wolf? Throughout the book, Bella’s feelings for Jacob are presented as friendship. She enjoys his company and her time among the Quileutes. . Then suddenly, we are told in Chapter 26 that she is actually in love with Jacob and tempted by the life he offers her. This revelation might have been more believable if we had indications that Bella saw qualities in Jacob that Edward lacked, or that a mortal life was starting to appeal to her.My sympathy toward Bella disappeared with each choice she made to run off to Jacob and allow physical intimacies more appropriate for sweethearts than best friends. It doesn’t matter that this was how things were between them “before,” Edward had come back and the relationship was restored. It wasn’t helping Jacob let go of his romantic attachment. It just encouraged him to keep thinking that if he waited long enough, Bella would choose him. As it was, I found his cockiness off-putting and absolutely despised him for forcing himself on Bella in a sickening scene. Charlie earned a special place in “character Hell” for his approval of Jacob’s actions. Edward alone redeemed himself from the unsavory turn his character had taken by giving up trying to dictate terms to Bella and instead considering her happiness.In spite of disliking how the characters behaved in this book, I still found parts I enjoyed. Humor was sprinkled throughout, which helped tremendously with finishing the story, and the plotline with Victoria and the newborn army was riveting.By the way, does anyone else ever read about Edward’s icy body temperature and think “There are some parts of a man I really don’t want to be freezing cold”?

My second favorite out of the 4 book series. Finally on the same page that they can't stay away from each other, Edward and Bella are back together! Not that they don't have their work cut out for them with dealing with mortality, Volturi & Jacob. Not to mention high school graduation. But they are united and more in love than ever so they know they can face anything.With the threat of the Volturi coming to Forks, the wolves and the Cullens must work together to keep Bella and the town safe. We also learn more about some of the other family members and their history of how they came to be.An action packed read with welcomed moments for your heart from our favorite couple.

Am so smitten with Yukteswar having met him, as most do, through the autobiography of Yogananda. Now this is the only book Yukteswar wrote and he was asked to write it by his own guru's guru, the youth known as Babaji . . . the purpose was to point out the consistencies, congruence, compatability of the Sanatana Dharma and Christianity . . . and this he does.But even better, in his introduction, Yukteswar corrects our understanding of the time involved in the different ages on earth, called Yugas. People can despair hearing that the darkest time, the Kali Yuga is good for another four hundred thousand years. This, says Yukteswar, was a scribe's mistake actually made at the onset of the Kali when people could not understand things they understand in brighter times.Indeed, Yukteswar's math agrees with that set forth by the preceptor of the International Krishna Society in his works. Also, it agrees with the cycles of time of the Sun around whatever it orbits, the galactic center, Vishnuhabhil.Which accounts for how much light or dark we live with here on Earth. So this book is more or less a must read for both those reasons. And because it's his only book and his influence on our spiritual history is just HUGE and only known to us because of Yogananda and his writing and remembrance.In Yogananda's autobiography is a chapter in which Yukteswar makes a visit to his sishya and beloved sometime after the guru hiimself had left his physical body. In that chapter Yukteswar explains and Yogananda records the entire process of coming into and out of the body. Great great stuff and heart-warming for anyone living in confusion or despair about what is going on with us as mortals with apparently immortal souls and inspirations.

At first, I must admit, I thought that I had made a mistake in purchasing this Kindle book. Sri Yukteswar began with an array of long numbers, long words, in an attempt to explain rather complex astrological knowledge. It was all Chinese to me. Fortunately, this only lasted a very few pages. Soon, what I was to read, blew my mind!I loved this book so much that I intend on purchasing in paperback form! A must have in my physical library.What did I like about it?The chill evoking implications that Yogananda's wonderful Guru points to! This is TRULY POWERFUL information! And he explains it so simply, clearly, beautifully! It is amazing how my mind went from, "I think that I just wasted some money," to "this information is worth so much more than what I paid for it!"Sri Yukteswar even gets down to the molecular level! You ULTIMATE Power, as Self, Spirit, Brahman, The Absolute, is plainly revealed here! It is definitely one of those books that you want to begin reading all over again as soon as you are done! Highlighting all over the place and highlighting new sections on every subsequent read!

I think Vivekenanda had a lot of useful information for westerners about the relationship between eastern and western religion. This book draws parallels but seemed fairly high level, which was fine. It wasn't incredibly insightful as far as techniques go. It seemed written for someone of Indian faith that was trying to parse their deity structure and put it in a Christian context, not for the Christian to put Christianity into a Hindu context. So, if you're not familiar with Hindu Gods, you could easily get lost in the panoply of names and descriptions of their holy scriptures, which are far more complex than the bible.

Sri Yukteswar wrote The Holy Science at the request of Mahavatar Babaji with the purpose of bridging Eastern and Western Spirituality. However, even though this book has verses from the Bible, its flavor is distinctly Eastern.The introduction to the book explores the calculation of yugas,, and stating the the object of this book is to point out the harmony underlying the various religions, and to help in binding them together.The book is divided into 4 Chapters: The Gospel, The Goal, The Procedure, The Revelation - according to the four stages in the development of knowledge. The highest aim of religion is Atmajnanam, Self-knowledge.The first section of the book deals with Veda and the Gospel, and seeks to establish fundamental truths of creation and to describe the evolution and involution of the world.The book is written in the form of sutras with commentaries, e.g.Sutra 1: Parambrahma (Spirit or God) is infinite, complete, without start or end. It is one, undividable Being."The Eternal Father, God, Swami Parambrahma, is the only Real Substance, Sat, and is all in all in the universe.Now, instead of adding characteristics of God as mentioned in the verses of the Gospel (as in "God is Light" or "God is Love"), Sri Yukteswar quotes the verses,"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.""Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the son of man, then shall ye know that I am he."adding that God is incomprehensible by man of this material world (by human consciousness), and can only be comprehensible if a man lifts himself above the creation of Darkness or Maya.Sutra 2: In Parambrahma is the source of all knowing and love, the root of all power and joy.Sutra 3: Parambrahma emanates creation, inert Nature (Prakriti) to emerge. From Om (Pranava, the Word, the manifestation of the Omnipresent Force) come Kala, Time, Desa, Space, and Anu, the Atom (the vibratory structure of creation)."Sutra 4: "The fundament of creation is Anu or the Atoms. Together they are called Maya or the Lord's veil of projection; each individual Anu is called Avidya, Ignorance."Atoms are the throne of Spirit the Creator. They are called en masse Maya, the Darkness, as they keep the Spiritual Light out of comprehension, and each of them separately is called Avidya, the Ignorance, as it makes man ignorant even of his own Self.He then compares these 4 ideas which gave rise to all confusions, to the 4 bests mentioned in the chapter of Revelations of the Bible."And in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind."The Holy Ghost, being the manifestation of the Omniscient Nature of the Eternal Father, God, is no other substance than God Himself, and so these reflections of spiritual rays are called the Sons of God - Abhasa Chaiitanya or Purusha."In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness comprehends it not."This now continues with exploration of the nature of the Ahamkara with 5 different bodies, different senses, different objects of the senses, and so on, followed by exploration of 14 spheres - seven swargas or lokas and seven patalas, five koshas or sheaths of Purusha, and different kingdoms from animal to angelic.On the 2nd birth he says "Through his luminous body, man, believing in the existence of the true Light - the Life of this universe - becomes baptized or absorbed in the holy stream of the sound. The baptism is, so to speak, the second birth of man and is called Bhakti Yoga, without which man can never comprehend the real internal world, the kingdom of God."Emancipation (Kaivalya) is obtained when one realizes the oneness of his Self with the Universal Self, the Supreme Reality.""When all the developments of Ignorance are withdrawn, the heart, being perfectly clear and purified, no longer merely reflects the Spiritual Light but actively manifests the same, and thus being consecrated and anointed, man becomes Sannyasi, free, or Christ the Savior.""Liberation is stabilization of Purusha (jiva, soul) in its real Self.""Residing in Self is liberation. When man raises himself above the idea of creation of this Darkness, Maya, and passes completely out of its influence, he becomes liberated from bondage and is placed in his real Self, the Eternal Spirit.""Then there is cessation of all pain and the attainment of the ultimate aim (true fulfillment, God-realization).""Liberation is salvation. On attaining this liberation, man becomes saved from all his troubles, and all the desires of his heart are fulfilled, so the ultimate aim of his life is accomplished.""I have said, Ye are gods;and all of you are children of the most High."

Be prepared to exercise your grey cells just to follow the text but keep going. It's well worth the effort.If you enjoyed the writings of Yogananda then this is part of a natural progression since Swamp Sri Yuktewar was his guru.
