The "Reading Level" for this book is listed as Young Adult, but the content, style and level of complexity should not be thought of as aimed at or restricted to teens. This is an outstanding and thoroughly engaging book, carefully thought out and written. If you have an interest in early man - or even if you don't -, you will enjoy it. I am far from being a teen, but I have re-read it several times for pure pleasure.

The Kin is a fabulous book for those who wish to better understand prehistory. It follows a group of four children who separate from their Kin because food has run out. They travel to find others. Not only a coming-of-age narrative, but a great insight on how early people lived. The chapters are interspersed with folk stories about the creation of different animals in a storyteller's mode.

The book held my attention from the first page to the last. I spent many late nights after my homework was finished to get in some reading time. I enjoyed reading the story from the perspective of different memebers of the group. The story was not predictible and was intriguing. I was left wondering if the people wore clothing, or shoes or slept on furs, so some information was left to the imagination. It was a volumous book but a very good read.

I really enjoyed this book. It was intriguing! Lots of action and emotion.

I used this book in my class to enhance our studies of the Neolithic age. The kids really enjoy it and it has helped them understand how the early people needed to move around and the difficulties posed in doing so.

GREAT READ

Speculative fantasy set in our distant past, when early humans were walking out of Africa, this brilliant quartet of children's novels (one from the point of view of each of four connected children who are forming a new tribe) takes you into the mind and mythological worldview of primitive proto-people.(In that sense it is like a kids' version of another of my all-time favorite books, The Inheritors by William Golding - a Neanderthal's view of the coming of modern humans.)But The Kin has another layer of brilliance: each of the four novels has a complete mythic tale woven through it, each chapter followed by a page or two of the myth, the two being thematically related and illustrative of the interplay of early human action and early human imagination.A unique work by a wonderful author of a wide range of novels.

After reading a few just so-so books, I really wanted to get lost in a great tome of a story. The Kin was just the ticket. The book is actually four novels published in one volume, weighing in at just over 600 pages. The story is paced really well, so I would look up from reading and realize I had just knocked out 50 or 75 pages in no time. I'm a huge history fan and have always been interested in the history of early mankind. Set in prehistoric Africa, this novel imagines what life was like for the clans of people surviving in the African deserts. The stories of Suth, Noli, Po, and Mana are interspersed with Oldtales, or creation stories about the Kin's First Ones, which I found to be really interesting and illuminating as to how the characters behaved and reacted to life in the wild. Each First One is an animal, such as a monkey or a pocupine, and each Kin is named after a First One. The mixture of myth and history was just perfect and very entertaining.A most interesting aspect of this book is how Dickinson imagined communication between speaking and non-speaking humans. The four children the stories follow belong to the Moonhawk Kin, which consists of highly verbal humans. Along the way, they encounter the Porcupine Kin, who are nonverbal but are still very communicative through sounds and gestures. Some of the Moonhawks say that the Porcupine Kin are not really 'people' because they can't speak words, but others, particularly Noli, are convinced that the Porcupine are just as human as anyone else even though they are different. All in all, this novel is a very interesting and thought-provoking work of 'prehistorical' fiction.

This book is more about Bashō than about haiku per se. it’s a quick read telling about his life and his relationship to poetry. He lived as a wanderer in between spending a few years living in huts built or lent to him by students and admirers. He had lots of humor in his work and I bet would have been quite fun to have a couple bottles of saki with.Haiku used to be something co-written. Someone writes a haiku and it is then given to someone else who writes two seven syllable lines after. I am fascinated by this. Must try it with friends. There is a name for this that the book tells us but I’m on the subway so looking for it right now is inconvenient.Anyway, it’s a good read.

Jane Hirshfield's Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry, a series of deep but approachable, gentle but commanding essays on poetry, is my favorite book on literature of all time. I am not a poet myself, but a life long admirer of poetry. Hirshfield illuminates the poet's mind and experience with the authority of an accomplished poet, but with a total lack of self-importance or contrivance. She brings that same wonderful depth of knowledge to this piece - a must for anyone who loves the haiku form - or wants to write better tweets! Hirshfield never disappoints, and I can't recommend this short piece highly enough for anyone fascinated by one of the most intricate and deceptively simple poetic forms, the haiku.

I have absolutely no background in poetry, or in arts of any kind. As a sporadic dabbler in all things cast in verse, I find this book arresting. The collection of verses in this book, for someone who otherwise does not have a knowledge of haiku, is both overwhelming & leaves you wanting more. Overwhelming because of the possibilities & suppleness of the verse, the beauty of the visual imagery, & the perceptions that permeate your senses. The symbolism is sometimes inscrutable. In sort of a zen like way, like the way you cannot clutch water from a stream. The threads of acceptance - another zen like feature of this style, or perhaps, Basho's style - run deep.Add to this Hirshfield's text. I reckon the word "explains" is rather petty for what she is able to do. Illuminates is more apt. She lights up a veritable mess of mystic mumblings & teaches us to see the whole the way we want to see it & experience it. She sets context, but hardly analyzes. She records history, but rarely opines. She takes us through a mollifying journey of the poet's life & points out how his circumstance changed affected his verse. She, like Basho, stays away from the dramatic & displays remarkable composure in stitching this story of remarkable beauty & pathos.I'd recommend this book very highly.@souvikstweets

Breath-taking and profound! I've been reading Basho & other Haiku masters for years, but Hirshfield in this essay has created an illumination of Basho much as Basho's haiku poems illuminate the moments & places where they came to rest. I found the translations exceptional, but greatly appreciated the inclusion of the Japanese. I was reading both the English translation & the Japanese original to myself aloud ... and found that the former was enhanced by the latter...as I'm sure Hirshfield intended. Much of what Hirshfield "accuses" Basho of doing, you also find in her work. In contextualizing Basho in his place & times she uses analogies with online gaming communities such as Dungeons & Dragons & more recently the rise of YouTube. I think you will find this exploration delightful & memorable & difficult to forget; hence helping you understand how haiku evolved from older forms of renga & tanka. If Hirshfield & I were friends, I would have said: Hey, Jane, find a way to add Cloud Computing to the analogy! And I don't doubt that she would have! I started reading this book around 3am, planning to read a few pages & off to sleep... but Hirshfield managed to make a must read cliff-hanger out of Basho's life & development as one of the world's greatest poets. So proceed with fair warning. This is one you may find yourself reading in one sitting. But the insights & images will haunt you.

Poetry translation cannot be impeccable. We find it difficult to feel that palpable otherwise we read the original.Fortunately this book juxtaposes Basho’s personal life and his poem so we can bridge the space between languages. His life as a wanderer becomes a plaintive poem itself. His existence had vanished long time ago but he left behind his insightful interpretation of beings and things. Coming to feel infinity in these elusive moments keenly because of that.

This is one of the most wonderful readings I have had in a long time. Is like entering to the heart of thoughts and even more to the the heart itself of the poet, and in him I find myself. It's inevitable to don't end loving deeply to Bashō and feel a calmness to enter a spirit so kind that talks to us intimately.I know that without the reading of this book I had read Bashō's words in a hasty way, fooled by the conciseness. Thanks very much, Jane.

A little book, it is a window to the art, life, and essence of Bashō, a poet eternally tied to haiku form. It is praising without being maudlin, educational without being didactic, it is humorous and sad, and no longer than need be. True to the spirit of haiku, the poetic form central to this book and Bashō's life, Hirshfield's book is short, simple, but has left me with thoughts to ponder for a lifetime.

It's mostly an essay on how the ocean belongs to no one nation, written in defense of what would be considered an act of piracy now that there are international courts and bodies governing the seas. Grotius simply tries to explain how no one man or nation can try to enforce ridiculous claims that no one else can legally sail where said person forbids. It would be a more convincing argument had he spent more time demolishing the basis for the claims for all rather than justifying the Dutch claims against Portugal's attempt to control all of the trade with Asia, from the right to sail upon the waters to interacting with the locals for trade. It's well written, but I think it lacks weight due to the limited subject upon which he talks.

Hugo Grotius has good reasons to write this book as a defense for the Dutch interest in the struggle with the Spanish crown. But he does it in a neat way. The book had impressive impact for posterity. If you want to understand the struggle for the Chinese sea today, read The Free Sea.

A man from 1609 waxing poetic about specialization-in-trade, hints of globalization, freedom of navigation, the rights of men, and universal values all in the space of a magazine - and you thought WE were smart.

After reading previous reviews about "Soiree...", I hesitated to order the book. But I did, and now I'm disappointed. Instead of being filled with "strategies and tips," as the book jacket describes, it seems to be more self-serving than anything. Danielle gets the spotlight with many photos -- she IS beautiful! -- and the book showcases several venues as well as her home, its furnishings, tables, accessories, etc., etc. But the book really doesn't assist others with throwing fetes and celebrations. And the menus and recipes seem a bit pretentious for the home cook looking to treat her guests to a special meal. Plus, Danielle uses hired chefs to create these meals; something the ordinary hostess does not readily call upon. Basically, I learned nothing useful. Just a lot of pretty pictures to look at, and a glimpse at how one wealthy hostess entertains. Sort of a Carolyne Roehm wannabe without the true talent of Carolyne.

I bought this book because I was an event planner and even though I am no longer working I still love to plan personal events and get togethers....This has been my go to book every time I plan a get together - be it small - large - fancy or simple...I love the pictures and all the helpful hints the book provides ...I have copied many of the table settings and the flowers arrangements for my own tables...The recipes are amazing and all the menu's provided are wonderful. This is not a cheap book but worth the money!

Really lovely photography and some excellent ideas for entertaining plus nice recipes. Nice coffee table book!

Bought this book for my sister-in-law's 60th birthday. She is an event planner and says she can't put it down because it has so many ideas, helpful tips, recipes and beautiful pictures of table settings, decor, food and more. This book was $50 at Gumps and she put it back so when I received an email from Amazon with a picture of it, I knew it was meant to be a gift to her from me and she loves this "keeper".

Very beautiful book, makes one want a giant house to store copious china patterns!

Yes, this is a nice book on entertaining. It is fun to sit down with it for ideas and recipes.. I would purchase it again.

This book is full of beautiful pictures and inspiring ideas for entertaining. We don't all have such a gorgeous setting for our parties, but there are still good suggestions that anyone can use. All the recipes I've tried so far were delicious.

Beautiful pictures, great ideas for entertaining and delicious sounding recipes. A beautiful book not only to decorate your coffee table but to actually use. Danielle does everything so elegantly, yet with a bit of fun thrown in!

The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature, by Steven Pinker

From Publishers Weekly

In his last outing, How the Mind Works, the author of the well-received The Language Instinct made a case for evolutionary psychology or the view that human beings have a hard-wired nature that evolved over time. This book returns to that still-controversial territory in order to shore it up in the public sphere. Drawing on decades of research in the "sciences of human nature," Pinker, a chaired professor of psychology at MIT, attacks the notion that an infant's mind is a blank slate, arguing instead that human beings have an inherited universal structure shaped by the demands made upon the species for survival, albeit with plenty of room for cultural and individual variation. For those who have been following the sciences in question including cognitive science, neuroscience, behavioral genetics and evolutionary psychology much of the evidence will be familiar, yet Pinker's clear and witty presentation, complete with comic strips and allusions to writers from Woody Allen to Emily Dickinson, keeps the material fresh. What might amaze is the persistent, often vitriolic resistance to these findings Pinker presents and systematically takes apart, decrying the hold of the "blank slate" and other orthodoxies on intellectual life. He goes on to tour what science currently claims to know about human nature, including its cognitive, intuitive and emotional faculties, and shows what light this research can shed on such thorny topics as gender inequality, child-rearing and modern art. Pinker's synthesizing of many fields is impressive but uneven, especially when he ventures into moral philosophy and religion; examples like "Even Hitler thought he was carrying out the will of God" violate Pinker's own principle that one should not exploit Nazism "for rhetorical clout." For the most part, however, the book is persuasive and illuminating.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I picked up this book since Richard Dawkins talked about his work with Mr Pinker on his chapter of evolution. Like Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker doesn't shy away from controversy, and just like Dawkins he's extremely well educated in his subjects in the smallest of details. He lights up a giant science blowtorch to both the left and the right's notions regarding human nature. As a parent of two children I was particularly interested in his parenting section, where the argument of "nature VS nurture" is torched. Explanations for how a parent does and doesn't shape their kids are unique, basically he's saying that parents are less significant than the rest of the environment (country, region, city/town) and what the culture that environment provides. While this might appear a "it takes a village" leftist argument, in reality it's just a common sense argument that I see every day as a person who left home to move to a different part of the world and after meeting a girl there; watch as my children grow up here and how different they are from me as a child and are more like other children here. Yet at the same time his use of adoption studies and separated twin studies are at once fascinating and also hard to argue against as he explains how much of us is in the genes and not in that environment. On crime and IQ he dispels moral notions and poses new ones as he explains our newfound ability to determine a person's pre-disposition to violent or peaceful conflict resolution via brain scans, which he admits should have been expected after the extraordinary 19th century case of Phineas Gage surviving a traumatic brain injury and his behavior change predicted it.He also tackles race, gender, and many other hot issues.

This book is about science and politics. Pinker took on the project this book represents after colleagues told him that little boys are aggressive because they’re socialized to be, teenagers get the idea to compete for appearance thanks to spelling bee awards, and men think sex is desirable because society tells them it is. In other words, humans are born a blank slate, only nurture, not nature, will make them what they are. “This is the mentality of a cult,” writes Pinker, “in which fantastical beliefs are flaunted as proof of one’s piety. This mentality cannot exist with an esteem for truth… [and is] responsible for unfortunate trends… [like] a stated contempt among many scholars for the concepts of truth, logic, and evidence, and the inevitable reaction [of] politically incorrect shock jocks who revel in anti-intellectualism and bigotry, emboldened by the knowledge that the intellectual establishment has forfeited claims of credibility…” Amen to that!Pinker shows the cult fearful of findings from cognitive science, neuroscience, behavioral genetics, and evolutionary physiology. Why? Because they make the errant assumption that pre-wired humans are incapable of being made moral and humane. Their interpretation of statistics was as certainty, not probability. Hence, what we’re now so familiar with from the Right were long before practiced by the Left. Scientific findings were not only denied and vilified, but scientists who dare desecrate the creed were attacked with smear campaigns, character assassination, and words put in their mouth only to pronounce how wrong they were. Even the likes of paleontologist Steven J. Gould (stunned me), geneticist Richard Lewontin (naturally), and the neuroscientist Steven Rose (daft) were dupes for the movement. This troika and the campus snowflakes they inspired labeled E.O. Wilson, Richard Dawkins, and Robert Trivers as genocidal bigots, racists, practitioners of eugenics, Nazis (yawn), and Right-wing prophets of patriarchy (more yawn). All because Wilson et. al. found biology responsible for much of human behavior. (Was this really a surprise?) While Pinker’s focus is social “science” doctrine, not the shock jocks he refers to (Rush Limbaugh etc.), as one reads this book it becomes apparent there’s no difference between the two, other than what they proclaim as sacrosanct and blasphemy. After a history of the blank slate starting with John Locke, followed by the Great Schism and what the cult is trying to protect, Pinker dives into measurement, data, and reason. The identical twin studies were so pronounced and ironclad, I had to reread them, then check references to believe these clones (which is what twins are) could be so identical in their behavior. That is, twins separated at birth, shipped off to different countries, class structures, learning environments, never to know the other or their common parents, found decades later to have the same behaviors in a myriad of the most nuanced and peculiar ways. Biology matters. So it is, with the purifying flames of science separated from politically correct programs of pseudo-morality, Pinker burns just about every quasi-religious Postmodernist liberal dogma in the blank slate arena you can name—with the exception of gender-fluidity, not yet concocted. I hope one day he’ll do the same to Creationists and global warming deniers on the Right. What a thrill, and a shame to find even biologists themselves got caught up in the PC creed of our times. It also clarified for me what almost cannot be done in physics and chemistry (except for transparent liars like Ivar Giaever). Biology, several steps up from the closest thing we’ve got to certainty in the foundations of reality, allows for some fiddle-faddle and hoodwink, so long as the promoter has a notable name like Gould. Limbaugh and Creationists love this. Gould, the troika, and their followers deserve their share of credit for the monster they helped create on the Right as a response to this kind of nonsense.

One of the most interesting books I've ever read. Is at a decent reading level (I would guess grade 12+), but an interesting read for anyone. It is a little all over the place in the first few chapters, but picks up after that and is extremely insightful. Has completely changed how I perceive the world. Would highly recommend to anyone that isn't skeptical of behavioral science.

Even though this book was published a few years back, it is very relevant in 2018. It helps to understand why people view things so differently as soon as human nature is brought into debates. Hopefully people will stop treating well-studied and well-founded scientific truths as though they are "taboo" or unspeakable just because they fear the consequences of admitting that we are not all born innocent and equal.

Important scientific corrective to the current politically correct insanity. And, Pinker's writing is clear and approachable, and sometimes even humorous.

Mr. Pinker is an exceptional thinker, able to correlate detailed knowledge to reach broad and well supported conclusions. I admire anyone who's work is assailed by each of the far ends of the political spectrum. He is a fine writer, clear and entertaining. To me, his only shortcomings are an occasional tendency to use too many words and a tendency to be overly (although justifiably) proud of his work.

This took me a while to get into but by the middle part of the book I was quite focused and enjoying it. My most valuable takeaway has been how science research has given support to what is legitimate in philosophies of human nature on the left AND the right. And what's wrong in those philosophies is where we spend most of our time being defensive and non-productive. Good science wins!

Bought this for my guitar buddy, as I have one of my own. Excellent for the novice and professional guitarist.

I was expecting some wear, markings, etc since it was used. Condition was much better than anticipated - practically new condition. No dog eared pages, no erased pencil marks, not even a worn cover.

I am considering buying this product. I couldn't find the section to ask a question. I am considering James Taylor -- Complete, Vol 2: Piano/Vocal/Chords (Sheet music) or Complete, Vol 3. My decision is based on what are the song choices for each. I found a list of almost all the songs for Vol. 1, but nowhere can I find a more complete list. I am sure it would help others as well as myself. Can you write me back with an answer? Thank you!

*This book was provided by the publisher/author for an honest review.Hurry Hurry! Don’t delay. The True Reign Series is a force to be reckoned with, and you will want to experience everything that the characters do. No matter what time of night you concluded your enjoyment of The Key, Book 1, you will need to download this book just to quell your book hangover. Not to mention there nasty cliffhanger of the last book. Like the greats (Karen Marie Moning) cliffhangers are a necessary evil, even though it kills us.In this installment of The True Reign Seris, it starts just where it ended. The resilient but scared, Rema finds herself in a foreign hidden organization. Her uncle and aunt are there, but it’s still an untrustworthy place. She is injured and relies on the fact that her necklace alludes to trusting Mako. She still hasn’t figured out the rest of the codes, but she will not stop until she learns what it all means.Prince Darmik is on the hunt for Rema. Knowing only that he wants to know if she is safe. He loves her and knows the King (his father) will stop at nothing to aid Prince Lennek from getting his retribution for Prince Darmik and Rema’s love. All the cards are on the table, but only a few of the cards are turned over. Once Rema uncovers the truth, will she back down from her destiny or will she rise to the occasion? Jennifer Anne Davis deserves all the applause in the world for this fantastic follow up to The Key!!Don’t stop when you finish either. Download the next book immediately for conclusion is definatly a must read!!!*This review was done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official.

I finished this book yesterday and have started the last one in the series. If I thought I hated King Barjon and his heir in the last book multiply that times 100. The king threatens Darmik in this book to find Rema or he is removed from his duty as commander. He is never really treated as a son so no loss there. The funny thing is he let Rema go when he had the opportunity to catch her because she is bleeding from the fall she took during her escape from the noose. Darmik also had his knife lifted ready to free her himself before the rebels jumped in and did it for him.The worst thing is the king is impatient and scared that evidence will be found out about the deaths of the royal family so he can't afford to have Rema free or Trell. Trell was the commander during the original battle and he lives with disgust and guilt for what took place. He wants to fix his wrong by bringing the queen to her rightful place. He has covered up the fact that the queen lived so that someday the rebels would come back to restore order. A bet is made and if Lennek and the Captain (assassin) find Rema 1st than Lennek is free to do whatever he wants with her before she is executed but if Darmik finds her 1st than she will just get the execution... decisions, decisions. It doesn't matter because Darmik has no intention of turning her over and finally decides to fight for the right team. Along side him is his best friend and most trusted soldier Neco. Together they find the royal fortress and pledge their loyalty to the queen.Rema awakes to a strange new prison of sorts and meets her savior Mako . She is still not filled in on her identity instead she is filled in on the city she is now in and told that is time for her to begin her training. Mako's commander Savenek has specific orders to teach her all he knows. Savenek was raised by Mako as his son and the two have a profound respect for one another. Savenek is a fierce fighter and other than training shows no interest in anything else. This changes once he begins his training with Rema. The two quarrel repeatedly and Rema even manages to put him in his place a few times but for all their fights and harsh words Savenek confesses his true feelings for her complete with a marriage proposal. There are several things I've left out and other characters that I did not even mention that are important to the story but each one has got there own part they contribute to the story and to introduce them would simply take too long. The main things are King and heir are still alive but are beginning to turn on the other, Rema lives and still loves Darmik who now has a rival in Sevenek. Through most of this book Rema and Darmik are kept apart but I think that was important because both characters had to grow and learn about themselves. They are brought back together and it is Darmik who tells Rema that she is Princess Amer.Again this is a clean book with only a few indiscretions by Lennek being mentioned or walked in on. The anticipation for how it's all going to end is there and I am patiently waiting to see the fall of the King and his heir. I have a feeling the king will be killed by Lennek but it is just a feeling at this point and it ends with another cliffhanger.

Continuing on from book one, The Key, this story is told from alternating POV's of Rema, the horse breeder's niece and Prince/Commander of Greenwood Island, Darmik. Rema has been through quite a scary ordeal at the end of book one and book two picks right back off in the same scene. The last chapter of book one is the first chapter of book two. I liked that because it brought me straight into the terror of what Rema is going through. There's so much to say and yet if I say too much, it'll give away too much from the first book and potentially ruin some things for the reader. Suffice it to say that I continue to love this story about kings being overthrown, about finding the rightful heir, about romance between two unlikely people who should be enemies, about betrayal and loyalty. This series has everything that makes a Young Adult Fantasy story a winner in my book!Rema is not some weak silly girl. She's got true grit and determination. She's kind and thoughtful and yet has a fire about her which comes out when she stands up for what she believes is right. She's an awesome heroine! Darmik is the second son of a ruthless king who rules with fear and oppression versus respect and honor. Darmik is the younger brother of a nasty, spiteful, arrogant and evil Crown Prince. Despite the loyalty he feels towards them and the love he has for them because they are family, he will rise to the challenge of doing what's right for the kingdom and its people. He is a true Hero.Books one and two both have an ending that immediately made me HAVE to read the next book! So even though book one was a FREEBIE (when I purchased it), I had no problems whatsoever purchasing books two and three! If you love Young Adult fantasy and romance, similar genre series like The Remnant Chronicles and His Fair Assassin, then this is a MUST read for you!Favorite Quotes:There was value in listening to the citizens, in treating others with respect and compassion."Remember," Trell whispered to Darmik, "her blood ties everything together. She is the weapon you need for peace."Language Rating: 1 (light)Mature Content Rating: 1 (light)Final Rating: 4.5 stars!
