Thinking Like Your Editor: How to Write Great Serious Nonfiction--and Get it Published

From Publishers Weekly

Two years ago, Betsy Lerner's The Forest for the Trees: An Editor's Advice to Writers offered an editor's-eye guide to aspiring writers of nonfiction. Now come Rabiner, former Basic Books editorial director turned agent, and her husband, Fortunato, a freelance book editor and writer, covering some of the same territory, but also breaking new ground. Wannabe authors might be shocked to hear that a fine writing style usually plays only a tiny role in whether a proposal becomes a book. Instead, according to the authors, the freshness of ideas and the size of the potential audience drive the process the first three rules of book publishing, as stated here, are "audience, audience, audience." In part one, on submissions, the authors discuss how to put together a book proposal and, without sounding self-serving, whether to work through an agent or go solo. In part two, they move to the writing process. Especially welcome here is their discussion of research undergirding all writing: authors and publishers, they note, sometimes become too lax about accuracy in nonfiction. Part three discusses how authors and editors (both in-house and freelance) can work together well. They offer a necessary tonic in advice about the importance of establishing a good relationship with the editor from day one that includes an author understanding that the editor's world doesn't revolve around one book. A sample proposal accompanied by a sample chapter round out the book nicely. Hopeful writers will be the primary audience for this title, and they will find useful advice on every page, but a secondary audience could include avid consumers of nonfiction who want to understand why some ideas reach book form while others do not. From Library Journal

Rabiner, a former editorial director at Basic Books, and freelance editor Fortunato are now partners in the Susan Rabiner Literary Agency. Their book (like their agency) targets those who write serious or scholarly nonfiction but hope to reach a wide audience. They begin with the usual fantasy sequence, leading readers through a discussion about which publisher they should select for their work university press or other. The book then explains in detail why authors must do research and present balanced arguments in their writing and why they must also have tangible credibility but write with a sense of narrative to appeal to a wider audience. These are basics, stress the authors, that must be mastered before an aspiring writer can hope to start speculating about how to spend the advance. The authors advise writers to approach editors first and give tips on how to do so; agents, they explain, are readily acquired in the wake of success. Better than average, this title mostly avoids feeding fantasies in favor of detailing necessities. Robert Moore, Parexel Intl., Waltham, MACopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I have always wanted to write a book, but have had difficulty in finding a subject for which I was both knowledgeable and passionate, and which has not been covered by other writers. I finally came up with a great topic this summer. It was one of those moments where the goal suddenly seem crystal clear, but I did not know the path to reach it. I was prepared to pursue the self-publishing route. However, I felt my subject was an important one that deserved more "professional" respect and visibility than might be garnered by a self-published book.I knew I would have to write a book proposal. As a novice author, I had no idea about the mechanics of the proposal process and how to maximize my chances of success. I researched several books on Amazon, and "Thinking Like Your Editor" seemed to fit my requirements precisely. It was a good choice. I very much appreciated the authors' approach. This book provided the "tough love" necessary to ensure that I was very focused on what I wanted to say. It was also reassuring to read that I didn't have to have everything figured out before submitting a book proposal - that in fact is was better NOT to have gone too far down the writing path before submitting the proposal. This book offers excellent tips on how to write effectively. It contains many illustrative examples of writing that misses the mark, and suggestions for how to improve your impact. Finally, I like that the book emphasizes the importance of narrative even in non-fiction. You're not writing a term paper or dissertation. A book needs to tell a compelling story, which many technical writers forget. That advice helped me hone my approach to my subject.I found a potential publisher through research on the web, looking up publishers of books in topics related to the one I wanted to write. I filled out their application. I also appended a detailed table of contents using the format suggested in "Thinking Like Your Editor," even though a table of contents was not called for in the application process.I submitted my application on a Monday, and on Friday that week, I got an email that my proposed book would be an excellent fit in this publisher's series on Space Exploration. I had a contract within two weeks.I highly recommend the book for anyone who is seriously interested in getting a book published. Even if you decide to self-publish, the advice in this book will be invaluable in helping you write a book that people will want to read. You still have to do all the heavy lifting, but this book gives you a plan for achieving your goals.Thank you to Alfred Fortunato and Susan Rabiner for putting me on the path to finally writing that book I've always wanted to write!

I bought five books to help me write a book proposal:"How to Write a Book Proposal, 3rd edition," by Michael Larsen"78 Reasons Why Your Book May Never Be Published & 14 Reasons Why It Just Might," by Pat Walsh"The Forest for the Trees," by Betsy Lerner"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published, 4th edition," by Sheree Bykofsky and Jennifer Basye Sander"Think Like Your Editor," by Susan Rabiner and Alfred FortunadoThe worst was "How to Write a Book Proposal." This book felt like a bad date, like I wanted to wash my hair after reading it. The intent is to teach you to be an "Authorpreneur (r)." Yes, Larsen has registered this word. You'll learn such gems as everyone has 250 friends, and each of them has 250 friends, so you can "spread the word" about your book to more than 62,000 people by e-mail. I think there's a word for that -- spam. Larsen also says to include your promotion plan in the book proposal, including pushing "the paperback edition as hard as you can" when it's published a year after the hardcover edition. I'm not an agent or editor, but I'd think that an agent would giggle quietly to themselves if you were so presumptuous as to include a marketing plan for the paperback edition. (To the author's credit, he doesn't say you should suggest which actor should play the main character in the movie version of your book.) Then there's the chapter about including illustrations and cover art. Excuse me, I thought the editor and art director develop the cover art? I can't imagine creating the book cover to include in the proposal. And the author recommends including a "surprise," such as a baby shoe with a note saying "Now that I have a foot in the door." The book has one good piece of advice: pick a good title. For example, "How to Write a Book Proposal" is a title that will make 100,000 aspiring writers buy your book, regardless of how awful the book is."78 Reasons" was good. Some sections are wrong, such as #38 and #39, which correctly advises against paying for a vanity press to publish your book but confuses this with self-publishing. I've successfully self-published two books, and unsuccessfully self-published one book. The correct answer is that if you have a niche book in a niche market you know well, self-publish. Self-publishing mass market books is a recipe for disaster. Some of the advice is excellent, such as #16, about "killing your little darlings" (a scene you think is brilliant, that you build the rest of the book around). While most of this book is sound advice to a novice writer, as an experienced writer I didn't learn anything new."The Complete Idiot's Guide" covers the entire process from thinking of an idea through book proposals, book contracts, publicity tours, etc. It's a good overview but each chapter is too short. You'll need to buy another book about book proposals, etc. I'm keeping my copy as a reference to turn to occasionally but it's not the last word."The Forest for the Trees" starts with six essays about writing, with topics such as alcoholism, self-promoting poets (starting with Walt Whitman), the childhood of famous writers, writers who are too successful too young, etc. These are interesting reading. The second half of the book is essays about publishing, starting with literary agents. One paragraph describes the plethora of surprise gifts writers include with their query letters. She's received baby shoes, presumably from readers of Larsen's book. She says: "Please resist the temptation to do any of these outlandish things...a simple, dignified letter with a clear statement of your intent and credentials will win more affirmative responses than any gimmick or hype." If you read Larsen's book, read Lerner's book as the antidote. The next essays are about dealing with rejection, the life of editors, what writers want from editors, how book covers are designed, book titles selected, etc. This book is descriptive, not proscriptive, so you'll learn how the world of books operates, if not be told how to write a book and get it published. I enjoyed the author's "voice" and I recommend this book. The best book is "Thinking Like Your Editor." The first half of the book is about preparing your book proposal. Unlike the other four books, reading this book made me completely rewrite my book proposal. The author begins by emphasizing the three most important things about a book: audience, audience, and audience. Who is going to buy your book? Not who might be sort of interested in your book, but who will feel that he or she must read your book. I'd thought about this before, but reading Rabiner's book made me think lucidly about this. She then walks you through the elements that must be in a book proposal, such as your thesis, or what makes your message unique and new and challenging; why is now the time to publish this book; and why are you the person most qualified to write it. The second half of the book is about writing your book, including the importance of narrative tension in non-fiction writing, and of presenting a balanced "argument" to make your views more convincing. The other four books made me say, "uh-huh, uh-huh" and not do anything. Rabiner's book made me spend several days working on my proposal. (My 2003 paperback copy has the typos corrected.)

"Thinking Like Your Editor: How to Write Great.....l"I've read this important book by Rabiner and Fortunato twice, underlined practically every page and am circling for my third run of reading it again. Of all the books one can have for a writer wishing to publish, this is the tome of tomes. It is daunting, at times humorous, but most important contains the exquisite advice of a person who knows. Susan Rabiner has years of experience in publishing and editing. This book is not a quick read and a feel good light piece. It is clearly an important book to have for both research and how to, and to dispel the myths of publishing. It should NOT collect dust on the shelf but be embraced, frankly, daily during the challenging process of readying a book for market.

Excellent book that focuses specifically on writing a non-fiction book and preparing it for publishing. It's written from an editor's point of view(as the title tells you) and also from the perspective of a literary agent, so it has a lot of inside information, you might say. It's written from the point of view of the standard publishing house/author relationship, as of its publication date, so is less geared towards the growing self-publishing market. But believe me, it is invaluable for people pursuing that route too. Perhaps even more valuable since they likely will not have the added advantage of encountering an editor's point of view, in terms especially of aiming for a particular market. I've got a good deal of insight form it already that has changed my intentions somewhat. I've just about finished reading it, and will go back and read several parts again. That's how useful I judge this book to be.

The book is great for drawing plans. I used it to design a shed dormer and found it easy to draw up my own dimensions and present the drawing to the building department. The book is useful for anyone wanting to design a roof or rebuild a roof. It's obviously written by professionals who know their trade

good book

The book covers alot of different roof types for the professional framer. Too complex for me. I'm only concerned with the basic gable roof and how to lay out the rafters on a framing square. Oh well. Would not recommend to the average handyman or carpenter.

great

I was very pleased with this product. It a very accurate representation of the color displayed on the site. Also, it is very difficult to find similar item in a retail store Finally, cam when it was estimated

I ordered this book for the Theories and Methods of Counseling course last semester. I was of course dreading the intense reading load that my Professor had in store for us, but I was surprised at how concise and organized this text is. Every chapter is broken down in relatively the same manner, and I loved how it broke down each major theory (such as humanistic, behavioral, psychoanalytic, etc.) into sub-divisions and founders/co-founders. As embarrassing as it is to admit that up until last semester, I kind of BS-ed knowing theories and the people involved with those theories, this text really helped me remember who did what, who founded what, who contributed to this and that. I would definitely recommend this text to anyone who needs a more structured, laid out format when it comes to this kind of material. The book did NOT come with the CD, but I believe on one of the first pages there is a website to go to that has the information to view the CD online. Luckily my professor let it slide when he realized 99% of the class did not get the CD.

Great price - no problems with the book. The only difference between this and my classmates books was mine was in black and white, the color was green instead of that pink-ish color and it was paperback ---- oh - and like 80 bucks cheaper!

I feel that the description noted is misleading. There is information given about the DVD "The Case Of Stan" and I feel that the purchaser of the book is lead to believe that the DVD is included with the book. I feel that the descripion SHOULD CLEARLY STATE DVD IS NOT INCLUDED WITH BOOK, however is available as an ADDITIONAL PURCHASE.I spent close to $60.00 to buy a new book so that I would be assurred to receive the DVD with it. This was a waste of money, because know I know that the DVD is not included and I could have purchased a used book for less than half the price. :(I am suprised that Amazon has not corrected this. This is a problem because as several other reviewers have said that they also thought that the DVD was included as well. BE AWARE THE DVD DOES NOT COME WITH THE BOOK!!!!!

I actually am enjoying this book. The case study of Stan has been so helpful to follow along and see various techniques used. I did find it distracting and irritating for the author to constantly suggest skipping around and reading later chapter's before earlier ones. Seems they should have simply organized it in a way that didnt require skipping around.

i'm studying for a master's in counseling degree. i won't keep all my books, but i will hold on to this one. if you simply MUST have the "case of stan" DVD, then i'm afraid you'll have to look for that package specifically, and purchase it new. my professor stressed we needed to buy dvd. however, you can find a good portion of the stan role plays on youtube. (btw, the new one with dvd is about $195). i didn't want to pay that much, so went with this one. and it has done the job just fine. in the book, at the end of the chapters, there is even a discussion of dr. corey's sessions with stan (a recap of what was on the dvd). i have had no problem. only two weeks remain in the course and i have a high "a" average.

I still have this particular textbook from my program because this one was by far the most helpful. It's broken down into several chapters that are concise, helpful and easy to read. The examples are AMAZING, and in the back of the book, it has a great summary of each theory, that I think really helped me ace my tests.

This book is great. It arrived fast and it is written in a way that it is easy to stay focused and engaged in. The way the author organized this book is brilliant, all in order of 11 different types of theories. I highly recommend this book.

As usual, Cengage have overpriced their mediocre books. To make it worse, as someone has already mentioned, the Kindle editions comes with neither a product key or access code so watching the recommended videos is not possible. In my case, I had no choice but to buy the Kindle edition. I live in the Middle East in a country that is very restrictive of the materials it allows in. Psychology and religion are two of the most banned materials. Rather than take a chance by ordering the print edition hoping it would get past the censors, it's easier to buy the electronic edition which can be downloaded over a VPN connection. Having access to the video and other materials available with the product code and/or access key might have made this experience better.

This book is well-written and to my amusement many of the words that I use on a regular basis in Yoruba is in the book and I am able to understand the origin and meaning of those words. The book is easy to understand and explains clearly the socio-economic and cultural heritage of the Yorubas in relation to our rich art. I am recommending this book to anyone who wants to know more about the Yorubas and the history of some of our arts.

Something good can come from tragedy when attorneys fight the good fight. A dynamic re-telling of K&S’ dedication to the letter and spirit of the law and striving to remedy misfortune and misconduct.

If you're looking for an uplifting story in a time when the news seems overwhelmingly negative, I highly recommend this book. Day after day, we are bombarded with stories about how Wall Street and corporate America are thriving while the average person on Main Street is struggling. Robert Zausner offers a bit of relief from this narrative as he does an excellent job telling the gripping stories of two very different American families fighting for justice, when the odds are stacked against them. The court room drama makes Two Boys a page- turner. Through clear and compelling writing, this book offers an insightful and illuminating view inside our legal system. The author should be applauded for translating two intricate tales into a cohesive, fast paced, enjoyable read. It's refreshing to see that, even in these volatile times, right sometimes wins over might. Take this book to the pool or beach this summer!

Two Boys is a true story of two boys from divergent ways of life and circumstances who are both permanently injured due to little or no fault of their own.One boy, Shareif, from a poor and minority background, has his foot caught in a malperforming escalator, which causes permanent loss of his foot. Another boy,Tucker, from a well- to- do family from upscale background, is accidently shot by a BB gun in the head which results in hospitalization and permanent brain damage. Both families sue the causers,in the case of the lost foot, the city which is responsible for the maintenance of the escalator. In the case of the BB gun, the manufacturing company which minimized the danger of the BB gun which caused the irreversible injury to Tucker. The only real connection between the "two boys" is that both suffered irreversible damage to their persons and that each family had to seek help in order to obtain their respective causer. Two legal battles ensued, one against a government entity;the other against a powerful toy manufacturer. After many legal battles both families won their cases. The permanent physical damage done to each boy could never be rectified, but in each case courts found that substantial damage claims would be awarded. The book is a study of excellent research, clear writing, and affirmation of the rule of law. Most likely not possible under any other political system.A first rate and moving story by an excellent author.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read the hard copy about a year ago. It is a great read about two families whose children suffered tragic injuries because the wrongdoers (a large corporation and SEPTA) failed to make easy fixes to their products/equipment. It tells how two passionate attorneys fought for justice and eventually succeeded in making the wrongdoers pay - and fix the problems to ensure that more children would not suffer the same fate. It demonstrates that our civil justice system really can work to protect the little people.

This is a well-written and approachable book telling the story of two prominent Philadelphia attorneys' tort cases involving tragic accidents with children. I enjoyed the book most as a case study of how to develop and litigate tort lawsuits. Others may be equally engrossed with the pure drama of the storylines. Highly recommended.

I blasted through Two Boys in two and a half days. The author brings to life two courtroom dramas that are both heartbreaking and uplifting. To bring justice to their clients, two grieving families, a couple of Philadelphia trial lawyers take on a callous manufacturer and a corrupt government agency. Bob Zausner was one of the Philadelphia Inquirer's finest reporters and he has a sure eye for character and detail as he keeps the pages turning on this one.

This is a great book! The way the author tells the story makes you feel like you are actually there with these people, feeling their pain. I loved it and so did everyone I recommended it to!

Welcome to Audacious FaithPastor Michael proudly showed me the place where his church was putting in new toilets. I was still adjusting to the smell, trying to pass it off like it didn’t faze me. Like I walked down urine soaked dirt roads every day.   “These toilets would not be very nice by the standards of your country,” Michael explained. “I know that. But here in the slums of Kampala, Uganda, so many children are sick because the food they eat is cooked right next to the hole in the ground where they go to the bathroom. So our church is building the nicest toilets we can here…for the children.”   I had a hard time concentrating as he went on laying out his plans. Because as soon as he said the word “children,” my gaze drifted to a cluster of kids playing some variation of Capture the Flag on the trash heap behind the church. The church was really just a shed. And instead of a flag, the kids appeared to be competing for an orange peel. It was weird how content these kids seemed playing with just a peel—more content, it appeared to me, than a lot of kids back home seem playing with a Wii. And this garbage heap here on the edge of Pastor Michael’s church property looked like the neighborhood hot spot. How, I wondered, would parents of elementary-school kids at my church react if they were asked to drop their children off at a playground like this one?   Pastor Michael’s church members obviously weren’t worried about it. They had been under the shed worshiping loudly for about an hour, and I realized they thought nothing of the fact that there was a small goat eating breakfast on top of the trash heap right next to where their kids were tossing around the orange peel. A scrawny, hungry, scary-looking goat.   Michael must have noticed that I was taking in the scene. “This is a Muslim hill,” he continued, yanking my attention back to our conversation. “I am used to facing a lot of opposition. A lot of people do not want me here. Especially the witch doctor who tried to destroy our church by threatening our members. But when we prayed for God to make fire fall down from heaven, and his house burned down that same week, he left us alone.”   I shot him a questioning look.   “Do not worry,” he said, a twinkle in his eye. “He was not home at the time.”   For the rest of the tour, I could barely keep up with Pastor Michael. He was moving fast and talking even faster. I felt clumsy and white trying to dodge the mud puddles while he led me down alleys through the slum. This was his village, he said. With every step, he detailed how he wanted to transform it for Christ. A school on this lot. A doctor’s office on that lot.   “For the children,” he kept saying…   Tonia could act like a total diva if she wanted to. She’s pretty, well paid, locally famous, and uber-talented. So people in our community are noticeably shocked when they show up to help serve breakfast at a homeless shelter and see Tonia in the kitchen making scrambled eggs.   It happened the other day. She was volunteering with an outreach group from our church when somebody asked me, “Isn’t that the lady from the news?”   “Yeah, that’s Tonia. She’s awesome.”   “What’s she doing here?”   “She’s serving.”   “Huh. Wow. That’s impressive.”   Actually, I would describe the way Tonia does her life as a few notches above impressive. I’d characterize it as audacious.   Strictly according to her job title, she is a news anchor—a multiple-award-winning one at that. But news anchor doesn’t begin to capture the essence of who Tonia is. She’s a community service superhero who has designed her life around leveraging her on-camera talent to make an off-camera impact. She’s better at it than anyone else I’ve ever met. Charlotte is filled with teen moms, homeless families, and shut-ins who have been touched by Tonia’s passion to serve. And she’s relentless about recruiting others to serve with her.   In her latest project, she set out to convince thousands to join her for an initiative called Love Week. She was asking them to commit to giving five thousand hours of service to the city. In a single week. It had never been done before.   I can’t say I was surprised when I heard that Love Week added up to more than ten thousand service hours. That’s just how Tonia rolls. When she gets a vision, it usually sounds a little out there. People try to explain to her that it’s never been done before. And I think she likes it that way. If it’s necessary, and it’s never been done, she seems to assume that’s because God intends for her to do it.To the untrained eye, a pastor standing in the slums of Kampala, Uganda, and a news anchor scrambling eggs in Charlotte, North Carolina, don’t have much in common. The challenges they face are as different as the hemispheres where they live. But I see them as twins: They share the same spiritual DNA. They’re driven by the same passion. They accomplish ridiculously amazing things for God’s glory. Their faith seems to be turbocharged from some source that the average Christian never quite taps into.   It’s hard to define exactly what sets Michael and Tonia apart from other people who claim to believe the same things they believe but lead, by contrast, mediocre lives. Most believers I’ve met actually do want to find the source of Michael’s and Tonia’s high octane faith—and they want it desperately. They just don’t know where to look for it.   Sun Stand Still is all about discovering that kind of faith. I call it audacious faith. By the time you finish this book, the same faith that pulses in Michael’s and Tonia’s everyday life will be pumping through your veins too. You’ll understand that God has much more in mind for your existence on this earth than merely surviving. What you consider possible for your life will expand beyond anything you’ve ever imagined. And the way you approach God and experience him every day will change too. Radically. Suddenly. Irreversibly.   But first, some honest disclosure.A THEOLOGY OF AUDACITYThis book is not a Snuggie. The words on these pages will not go down like Ambien.I’m not writing to calm or coddle you.   With God’s help, I intend to incite a riot in your mind.Trip your breakers and turn out the lights in your favorite hiding places: insecurity and fear. Then flip the switch back on so that God’s truth can illuminate the divine destiny thatmay have been lying dormant inside you for years. In short, I’m out to activate your audacious faith. To inspire you to ask God for the impossible. And in the process, to reconnect you with your God-sized purpose and potential.   You could think of this book as a one-volume theology of audacity. You probably don’t have one of those yet, but it’s essential. In fact, if you ever encounter a theology that doesn’t directly connect the greatness of God with your potential to do great things on his behalf, it’s not biblical theology. File it under Heresy.   I’ll take that further: if you’re not daring to believe God for the impossible, you’re sleeping through some of the best parts of your Christian life.   And further still: if the size of your vision for your life isn’t intimidating to you, there’s a good chance it’s insulting to God.   Audacious faith is the raw material that authentic Christianityis made of. It’s the stuff that triggers ordinarily level-headed people like you and me to start living with unusual boldness. When you live this way, your eyes will be opened to see your day-to-day life in vivid color. Your spiritual growth will accelerate at a supernatural pace.   If you’re like most Christians, audacity is not a word you use to describe your faith. Audacity, my dictionary says, makes regular people behave with “boldness or daring, especially with confident disregard for personal comfort [or] conventional thought.” And, if you think about it, confident disregard for the status quo is the essence of the gospel. It describes the radical path Christ’s life took on earth. It goes to the heart of what it means to live by faith.   Of course, every believer in Jesus has a measure of faith—it’s the prerequisite to salvation. But after that, if we’re honest, we think of faith primarily in terms of a spiritual thought or a comfortable feeling. We hope it’s enough to get us to heaven when we die. But in the meantime, it’s barely enough to keep us praying, giving, and going to the eleven o’clock service.   Let me ask you: does the brand of faith you live by produce the kinds of results in your life that you read about in the biblical stories of men and women of faith?   Chances are, not even close.   For most of us, this disparity is hard to live with. The chasm we see between our mundane spiritual experiences and the overcoming faith we read about in the accounts of biblical heroes is downright discouraging. It can create a heavy weight of condemnation and a sense of failure in our hearts. We can begin to feel like maybe our faith isn’t the real thing. Some believers I’ve known have gotten so tired of faking faith that they have just given up altogether.POSTTRAUMATIC FAITH DISORDERI’ll admit that faith is a sore subject for millions. It’s been abused, mishandled, distorted, and ultimately disfigured. Sometimes it seems like there’s a custom-tailored faith for everyone:   If the Galatians 2:20 kind of faith—“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me”—is too clunky for you, trade it in. Exchange it for an easier, no-money-down model.   If trusting in the miracle-working power of Jesus is too out there for your modern mind, play it safe. Don’t ever ask God to provide for you supernaturally. Don’t dare to ask for physical healing or anything else that would put God on the spot. Because what if he doesn’t come through?   A lot of Christians I know stagger through life in a daze. Suffering from posttraumatic faith disorder, they hunker down in the basement, open a can of Beanie Weenees, and wait for the end of the world.   Am I reading your mail? If so, you’re probably stuck in spiritual survival mode. You’ve settled for spiritual mediocrity. You’re not trying to be a hypocrite. It’s just that so far the faith thing hasn’t, well, worked for you.   But we can’t let abuses and misunderstandings hold us back. God has no plan B. The Bible throws down the gauntlet in Hebrews 11:6:      Without faith it is impossible to please God.   It doesn’t get any plainer than that. Faith isn’t just a Get Out of Hell Free card. It’s the most vital building block of your relationship with God. And it’s the only real foundation worth establishing your life on.   We can’t abandon the life-changing promise of full-frontal faith because some have dealt with the topic recklessly and unbiblically. It would be a shame for us to let bad experiences or past disappointments keep us bound, poor, and blind to what God wants to do in our lives.   We’ve got to find a better way.THERE IS A BETTER WAYYou’re about to discover what happens when you dare to believe God for the impossible, ask God for the impossible—then act in audacious faith for his glory.   You’re about to discover that faith is not a drug to sedate you through a life you hate; it’s a force to transport you to another realm of reality.   There is a better way—a higher calling to fulfillment and significance that God deeply desires for your job, your marriage, your parenting, your finances, and your impact on this world.   That kind of life may be a long way off from where you live and breathe right now. And it may take a little convincing before you believe this kind of life is even an option for you.   Maybe it will help if I introduce you to a man who experienced firsthand what happens when you live with audacity, believing God for the impossible. You’re already a lot more like him than you think.

This was a hard book for me, because it really hit me right where I needed it to. The book is all about the voices we listen to - in our head, in our heart... and how we often (far TOO often!) listen to the wrong ones. I think girls are especially susceptible to this, but I'm sure guys do it too! The author tell us that "this book is built on four confessions... meant to function like noise-cancelling headphones for your mind, heart, and soul." He goes on to tell us that they are:Confession 1: God says I am.Confession 2: God says He will.Confession 3: God says He has.Confession 4: God says I can. While these four confessions seem simple, even simplistic, they are each true. There is Scripture to back each one of them up. And they each have power. But they aren't going to change our lives unless we believe them, and trust that God is who He says He is, He will do what He says He will, and I am never going to be alone because He's always with me. That is incredibly powerful! The book goes into great detail about each of these, and expounds on why the confessions are important, but also why the thought behind each of them is important. He does a fantastic job making it seem like anyone can learn to move past that inner voice, the voice that is NOT the voice of God talking to us, but a voice that is only speaking things to make us doubt ourselves, and to doubt God too. The author makes it clear that while there's no way to completely be rid of the chatterbox, there are ways to help silence it. As someone who has a very noisy chatterbox (and is also a chatterbox herserlf, ha ha!), I really appreciated the way things were presented in this book. Nothing that was shared was earth-shattering, but it was good, sound advice with practical ways to change how you look at things. It's important for us to understand that we're not supposed to listen to the chatterbox - we're supposed to listen to the still, small voice of the Lord. He doesn't talk to us to confuse us, and when we're feeling conflicted about something, it's highly likely we've been listening to the chatterbox! At the end of the book, the author gives you the website for this book - [...] - and invites readers to visit the site, click on "Calling all Chatterboxers" and find all sorts of additional information. I went and checked it out, and while I couldn't find that link to click on, I did find some great video clips of interviews with people I know from other books and studies. They included: Dr. Henry Cloud, Shaunti Feldhahn, Christine Caine, and Mandisa (among others!). Those video clips are well worth checking out!I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, in exchange for my honest review. The thoughts and opinions expressed here are completely my own.

“Sun Stand Still” is Steven Furtick’s call to Christians to unlock their potential by believing that God is ready, willing, and able to do the unimaginable in their lives. He bases his assertions on personal experiences, experiences in the lives of his church members, and on biblical examples such as Joshua (the basis for the title to the book). This is the first book that I’ve read by Furtick, but I am very familiar with him. I listen to the Elevation Church podcast regularly and I thoroughly enjoy Steven’s heart and passion as a speaker. He’s absolutely one of the most gifted presenters that I’ve ever heard. He’s also involved in their worship ministry and has written or co-written several of the more popular worship songs that have come out of the Elevation worship group.Furtick’s book opens strong. The begining of the book is filled with highlighter-worthy quotes that will leave you pondering them long after you’ve moved on to the next chapter. There is no shortage of bulletin board one liners here. Two of my favorite ones were:“….if you ever encounter a theology that doesn’t directly connect the greatness of God with your potential to do great things on his behalf, it’s not biblical theology. File it under Heresy.”And“if the size of your vision for your life isn’t intimidating to you, there’s a good chance it’s insulting to God.”These are powerful and profound statements and Furtick excels at this, not just in this book but also while he’s preaching. It’s one of the things that make him so exciting and engaging to listen to. My issue with the book is that it seems to me that Furtick had a really great idea and point, but didn’t really have enough material to fill an entire book. This would have made a great Sunday morning sermon (and probably did). It would have made a great little set of worksheets for a small group bible study (and probably did). But I can’t help but feel like it falls short as a book. There is too much unnecessary “filler” material and repeating of points to get the book long enough to call it a book. Where in the beginning I was soaking up every line and enjoying the encouragement and fresh perspective, through the middle I found myself reading just to finish the book.Another area that I think Furtick excels at in his speaking but might have fallen a little short in this book is in his way of using his language choices to relate to people. The book opens with Furtick talking about how amazed he is that Elevation church held a worship service in the same arena where he had seen the band U2 play a couple of years before. Later on he makes some cultural references to things (such as Nintendo’s WII video game system). Even in the write up blurb for the book on the Amazon home page, two statements he makes about the book are: “This book is not a Snuggie”. “The words on these pages will not go down like Ambien”. And while all of those references make perfect sense to me and anyone else reading the book today, I just wonder if it will affect the potential longevity of the book as far as potential future readers are concerned. I recently read a book by the late D.L Moody. The book was written before 1900, and yet it was as fresh and powerful for me as it was for people the day it was published. I just have to wonder if Furtick’s choice of examples, phrases, and word choices will hinder future generations from being able to connect with it.I think some of the book is excellent. I think more of the book is pretty good. But unfortunately I think a lot of the book is just ok and kinda rambles on. I still love listening to Furtick and I would read him again, and while I think there were some excellent points made in the book, I think overall this one is just OK. I give it three out of five.

I gave this book to my daughter who has serious problems that this book deals with.. I didn't have too much hope that it would help because she has tried so many other things like retreats, programs, counseling etc. I was overjoyed to hear her excited response that this was the best book she had ever read on the subject. She has greatly improved already and just from one reading of this book. I therefore can heartily recommend this book to all who suffer in this manner. I must add that I do not necessarily endorse any other of Mr. Furticks writings or ideas. He seems to be a mixture of good and not so good, scriptural and not so scriptural. But this review is for this book only and I do say it is very good.

What an awesome book! As mature Christians we can often fall into complacency instead of believing God for amazing miracles. This book reminds us we serve a living working God and He can do what we would consider impossible. I ordered this book with a bunch of other women from my church and we made our own book study. It is great to read alone and works as a discussion starter. I highly recommend this book to anyone with eyes to read with! I enjoy writing reviews. This book is a blessing! I have been blessed, challenged and changed. I have been inspired by Pastor Steven Furtick. He's transparent and funny. He will make you cry and think. There's one particular part that made me bawl - a full weep. You gotta get this book! There's insight on how to crash those negative voices that we all have to deal with. He doesn't water it down. He doesn't lie and tell you that they'll go away, but he gives you tools to defeat the power of the Chatterbox, time and time again. The audio is the best! I promise, you will not be disappointed.
