I did not know what to expect when I got this book from Amazon! But the book kept me engrossed from the very beginning!!The narrative brings an undergraduate student, her senior detective father and an extremely intelligent post doctorate physicist together in resolving the mystery of the Turin Shroud! The youngsters Amari and Kevin are struggling to do their best to prove the authenticity of the shroud despite the C-14 dating results and come up with irrefutable proof with photographs.Amari's father in the meanwhile is working very hard to catch a serial killer who is targeting churches and a synagogue, killing the officiating priests and rabbi and burning the places of worship! In a rollercoaster of a twist of the story that encompasses car chases, shooting to kill incidents and chasing the main characters across the ocean with deadly intents that also involve plans to destroy the shroud, the book keeps the reader glued to the book unable to put it down until it is fully finished!What a fascinating book! I was disappointed to know that I have to wait till 2018 for the next Amari Johnston thriller!!

Very interesting and well written. I would have given it a 5 star; except it was slightly predictable. I do like very much that the author did not sex it up just too add words!

This mystery-suspense crime thriller is a well-paced, engaging read. In addition to surrounding a Christian topic, the Shroud of Turin, the story is Christian overall in tone and content. I learned a lot about carbon dating and the history of the Shroud, adding to my enjoyment. Some of the dialogue could've been better, and I noticed a few point-of-view problems, but I can still recommend this novel to teens and adults, especially those interested in history or Christian history in particular.

I really enjoyed this book, especially the facts about the Shroud that were authenticated.I look forward to the next book

Nice plot and well written! Good character development with main characters you take an interest in. Grateful to read a story free of obscenity and having romance without gratuitous sexuality. Appreciate characters that have a relationship with God and a strong moral code, yet the book isn't preachy. Enjoyed the topic. The Shroud of Turin is a fascinating subject.Looking forward to reading another Amari Johnson adventure.

A very interesting and entertaining novel by Mr. Williams! Very good character development and a thought-provoking and inspirational Christian novel. Immediately ordered his next in series of the Amari Johnston adventures. A must-read for sure!

Although not a connoisseur of the Shroud of Turin either in the news or in novels, I was intrigued by this story. I enjoyed the research on the Shroud's origins as a backdrop for an engaging mystery-thriller. Carbon-14 also works as a good young adult book given its likeable youthful protagonist and her contemplation of life choices while blissfully sparing the reader the usual postmodernism irritations.

This book was a fun distraction. The brief inclusion of speculation about the Shroud certainly is fun for those of us who believe the Shroud is genuine and the carbon dating was flawed. The characters are a little lightweight and stereotypical, but are sufficient for a detective story. All in all, not a classic, but still a fun read.

This was a very good book and I debated between four and five stars. The details and emotion that comes through the writing was excellent but it did get a bit long in some parts.

Maybe I'm being too critical, but I have been struggling with this story for a while now. Originally I was attracted to this novel by its never-before-told aspect along with its emphasis on Italy and the often-overlooked heroes within that country. I had previously read "From Sand and Ash" which first introduced me to this branch of WW2 history even though it was a completely fictitious story. I expected "Beneath a Scarlet Sky" to provide a more accurate account of a real-life person who had been involved in these events. Unfortunately, I have been incredibly disappointed.First, let me say that regardless of how much of this is actually true (and I have my doubts), this fictionalized version of Pino Lella is so unrealistic. Essentially, he's a seventeen-year-old prodigy who can do no wrong. He is strong, clever, exceptionally skilled at pretty much anything he attempts, and he doesn't seem to have any real conflict with or animosity toward anyone (well, except the Nazis). He is quite possibly one of the most unrelatable characters that I've ever come across in a literary work. Just as ONE example, here is a future race car driver complimenting Pino on what a gifted driver he is, because of course he is:"Pino allowed a mild smile. “You catch on fast. I wish I could have finished my driving lessons.” “You are already very, very good, Pino,” Ascari said. “You have the touch, the feel for the car that is rare.” Pino basked in the praise." p. 163 (Kindle edition)Since all the attention is given to Pino and his amazing accomplishments, the supporting characters are extremely bland and indistinguishable. The only thing I really knew about each character was if they were "good" or "bad" (and this was primarily based on whether or not they were German).Second, I was surprised by the simplicity of the writing. At times, the text reads like a middle-grade textbook as it lists off names, facts, and dates. The dialogues felt very stilted and occasionally only consisted of a couple of lines before ending abruptly. If it was going to be so concise, did there really need to be a dialogue at all?While I normally get frustrated with authors who insist on including excessively detailed descriptions of the characters and their surroundings, this book had almost none. This made it hard for me to immerse myself in 1940s Italy. At first, I assumed that perhaps this author just doesn't care to spend a lot of time on superfluous descriptions. However, the passages about Pino hiking went on and on FOREVER! Here were the descriptions I wanted back when I was first introduced to the characters in Milan, but now they were unnecessarily lengthy and only focused on a single character and his "treacherous" hikes through the Alps.Third, precious little in this book actually feels plausible or authentic. There are so many instances of characters (especially Pino) who just happen to be in the right place at the right time. The moment where this novel lost ALL credibility was when Pino, after almost single-handedly digging out from an avalanche, goes skiing with a pregnant woman clutching onto his back. This woman, who had been spotting blood only moments before and felt so weak she couldn't go on, lets out a "Wheeeeeeee" as they race downhill and then plays her violin for him after they reach safety. Ummmm, no. I've read historical fiction with completely fabricated characters and situations that have felt less fictional than this.It grieves me so much - especially considering this is based upon real heroes - but I can neither continue this nor recommend it to others. If you've read it and know that it gets better, let me know and I may give it another shot. But for now, I'm done.

I love historical fiction. I have been reading a lot of WWII historical books lately. I was not really wanting to read 'another' one. But, we were traveling to Milan, and this true story took place in Milan. So, I bought it, and started reading it a few days before the trip. Once we were in our hotel on the street Corso Matteotti, I was amazed to find out that Pino Lella grew up in that area and at onetime lived on that very street! A very well written book. A very amazing life Pino lived. I did not know that Milan was affected so much by WWII. I definitely recommend it. Pictures are of the church San Bbila - the neighborhood where Pino grew up, and of where his parent's purse shop and his uncle's leather shop used to be.

The front and back cover are lovely. The blurb is fantastic but that is where it ends. Boring beginning, stilted dialogue, a hero who is too good to be true contributed to my not finishing this book. I think book quality has spiraled down recently and this is a prime example. Some sentences were incomplete, not grammatically correct and read like middle grade adolescent fiction. I could not get interested enough to read it after perhaps 25%. When I want to read entertaining World War 2 fiction I’ll take out my old Ken Follett books. One thing he always did which makes his books believable is he made his characters human, even the bad ones.

Very poorly written with countless impossible and eyeroll-worthy sequences of events. I was tempted to give it 3 stars only in the hope that someone on the fence would come across my review and treat it as more valid. Absolutely no character development and minimal association with actual history. I don't typically take the time to review anything but given the billions of 5-star reviews this book somehow has, I felt the need. I'm stopping a third of the way through and going back to non-fiction.

perfect help for my trip

This frommers guide was used when I went to Egypt in 2010. It was very helpful. Recommended for your trip. Don't miss traveling to Egypt you won't regret it. Take this guide with you.

This helped us on our trip but make sure you get the most recent edition as things change very quick in that region.Was definately a trip of a lifetime...

This is the best book you can buy with useful information about traveling in Egypt! This is not one of those book full of pictures with no information that you can actually use.I am getting ready to go to Egypt and of all the 5 books I bought, this is the best!

I didn't get a chance to start reading this book, but I plan to do so soon. Unfortunately, my plans to travel to this country changed because current events havedemonstrated that travelers could get arrested simply by being there.

I have used Frommers in the past, and overall I have thought the information was useful. However, this time I took a trip (to Egypt for 2 days) that was put together by a company, so my hotels/restaurants, etc were already taken care of. Thus, the nitty-gritty info that Frommers provided was not needed. In addition, the book just wasn't fun to read. I so much more enjoyed Fodor's Exploring Egypt and DK Eyewitness Travel guide to Egypt, as they both contained fun information and it was exciting to discover in graphics that were pleasing to the eye. Unless you're booking your own hotels and the like, I'd probably stay away from Frommers.

I really thought this guide book was easy to read, and packed with worthwhile information. I'll let you know more when I return.

Usually we swear by the Frommer's guides. This one, though, disappointed. We found some of the advice dated and inconsistent with our experience in Cairo.

I really like this book for quite a few reasons:Well written and easy to followFor beginners like me (started using Cannabis for medical reasons) the authors explain the chemical properties and how they work in the real world.For instance, I have heard about dosing sizes 5mg 10mg but did not know how that worked in my home kitchen. The authors explain this. One thing you need to know is how much THC is in the "Herb" in order to ascertain dosing amounts.The recipes are fun are mostly all Jamaican based but I think the ingredients should be easily sourced. You can make the recipes with or without Herb.There are lots of anecdotes about the Marley family.I look forward to trying some of these recipes and it also gave me information how to incorporate Herb in other dishes.This book is great for beginners like me and I think people already knowledgeable about Herb could have fun with the recipes.It has just enough information to not be overwhelmed for beginners.

Great cooking book but I wish there were more photos of recipes, the only 4 out of 5 stars.But overall I am enjoying the book a lot. Also there is body skin care too.

Our pastor has often mentioned this in Sunday school as a basis of information in either a sermon or class. It is a great reference book as it answers questions about Christian beliefs by giving the scriptural references. (For the younger person who reviewed it, it is not a great read nor is it meant to be. It is the basis of the " whys".... Why we believe as we do.)

There are several different versions of the Shorter Catechism but this one is well laid out and had the scripture references with the questions. It has the reference but not actual scripture which works and doesn't interrupt the flow of the catechism. This is the best version of the Shorter Catechism that I have found. I also like the publishers version of the Westminster Confession.

The shorter catechism although shorter is still quite detailed in its teaching. Easy to read but, you need your Bible in order to read the scriptures given as proofs. I enjoyed reading this work and learned some things in the process.

good for those who wish to review what they should have learned when they were kids in the catechism class.

Contains the Shorter Catechism with Scripture references as footnotes at end of each question. Each question is separated by a line which is helpful. Only fault is that there is no navigation in this Kindle version, the "go to" feature only gives option for beginning, end, cover, and location - in other words you could not (for example) go to Q. 45, etc. I rated this a 3 star only because of the lack of navigation. Of course the Westminster Standards in and of themselves are five stars.

Has the questions/answers and all the bible verse references to back them. Easy to read font and format. FYI it's the older style English like the KJV Bible for those who prefer something written in a style closer to how we speak now.

A clear copy of one of the greatest documents in church history. It presents pure Calvinist theology.

I used the Igbo language version of this some forty years ago. That version did not have all the Bible refrences supporting the answers. This is what I love in the English edition. Recommended highly for sunday school teachers who deal with teenagers.

He helps us understand how to hear from God without over-relying on our intuition.Miller writes honestly as someone who has struggled with prayer himself, but also as someone who has learned to pray. The book is steeped in the reality of family life, and is, as some have called it, kind of a prayer memoir. Rather than a weakness, I see this as a strength. It not only teaches about prayer, but illustrates its teaching with stories from his own life and family.A Praying Life illustrates what a real, messy life looks like when it’s a life of prayer. It makes a praying life seem attainable, and a prayerless life unimaginable. If you, like me, would like your life to be a praying one, then I highly recommend this book. I wish I’d read it years ago.

If you're struggling with the overly strategic, formulaic, corporate method to prayer, Paul Miller will turn your approach back decades until you, once again, are approaching God as He most desires - with the helplessness and honesty of a little child. Forget everything you thought about prayer and start fresh at the very beginning. In all the confusion of what prayer really is, what it does, and what it should be, this book helped me cut through all the noise and get back to the ultimate goal of simply speaking vulnerably and honestly with God. Now I'm ordering additional copies because every time I recommend this book someone wants to borrow my copy and I don't want to share. Next item to add to the prayer card for myself: have more charity.

Overall Miller shares some helpful advice on connecting with God in prayer, yet his book would better be called "A Praying Memoir" (as another reviewer suggested). I appreciate Miller's transparency as he shares many personal stories, especially related to the challenges with his autistic daughter Emily. It was encouraging to hear his answers to prayer and what God was teaching him through these challenges. I also was encouraged by his teaching on approaching God as a Father in child-like dependence on Him. What was disappointing was that most of the content of the book was merely based on his experience. At the out set of his book Miller states, "The meat of this book is the family stories I tell." (pg.12) Because of this, I learned allot about Miller and his family but very little on what the Bible says about prayer. I do think personal experience stories are often helpful in illustrating truth, but they can't compare to the the power the Scriptures.One of the results of writing a book based on "lessons from life" is that the flow of the book seemed disorganized and wordy. It felt like Miller had so many truths about prayer and about the Christian that he wanted to stuff into one 277 page book, but they did not fit together in a cohesive theme. Regardless of these matters, I am thankful for the few nuggets I found in this book and the encouragements to pray. I just wish I could have learned something more substantial that would have helped my prayer-life.If you are looking for some practical advice on prayer with many stories to illustrate each point, perhaps you will find this book helpful like many others have. But if you are like me, and want a book on prayer that's more meaty and biblically-rooted, there are better resources available, particularly older works.Here's some recommendations: Prayer (O.
