The guide combines an appealing mix of narrative, maps, photos, and diagrams to capture the highlights in each region of Canada, including the major cities of Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver. Each section notes historical sites, city zoos, beautiful natural scenary, uniquely Canadian institutions such as the Citadel at Quebec, towering over the St. Lawrence River, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy and Museum, and Canada's astonishingly good provincial museum system, with outstanding examples in Calgary and Winnipeg, for example.With the help of some local maps, this guide allows visitors to find and enjoy their choice of a variety of attractions. The guide includes tips on navigating Canadian customs, airports, dining, accomodations, and money. This reviewer utilized the guide for a multi-day trip on the Trans-Canadian Highway, picking out interesting sites to visit during each day's travel. Highly recommended as an excellent planning and touristing resource to Canada.

This book is an excellent choice if you want to get an overview of what’s to see in Canada and where the different sites are located. The book’s innumerable photographs are very pretty, but to my mind, its standout feature is its many maps, which give an excellent idea of the layout of cities and areas and where the sites of interest are in relation to each other. There don’t seem to be many tourist guidebooks that cover all of Canada, and this is probably the best of them; it’s certainly infinitely superior to the Worldwide Travelers one, which tells you almost nothing.“Introduction” is the operative word, however: to plan a trip to Canada in any detail, you will also need to buy region-specific guides such as the Fodor ones or do further research online, because the DK book provides no information on such things as hotels. This is not surprising, given the huge area the book covers, but I could wish for somewhat fewer photographs (though I realize that those are one of the specialties of this series) and more information.

Just went on a 2-leg Canada trip - first visit. This guide (as all DK do) delivers an excellent background and wonderful overview of this beautiful country. Highly recommended.

If you are travelling to Canada, then this is the guide you need. It starts with an overview and then covers each province and city along with their attractions, places to stay, eat and a whole lot of other useful details. The paper is glossy and thick. Its weight (almost 400gm) may be an issue. I would have preferred a lighter guide to carry along. I guess it will take the rigours of my backpack better. Looking forward to a month of backpacking in Canada with this book as a guide.

This small book surprisingly contains very specific information about so many things a person needs to know when planning a vacation. Lots of very nice photographs and detailed city center sightseeing maps.

This is an excellent book written with neutrality, science-based evidence, and clear for everyone to understand. This updated version is very important to read as the world faces many threats, one of them being the sustainable food production and the challenges this represents with population growth and climate change. Dr. Pamela Ronald offers very concrete examples on the safety and benefits of genetic engineering in food production, and the positive outcomes it has had in different parts of the world. She's also a supporter of organic food (her husband is an organic farmer), but she does a smart balance of both food production method as she says we need to evaluate the effectiveness of each on a case by case basis. I like her approach and writing style because at no point I feel she's trying to convince me of anything; the reader comes to their own conclusions based on the evidence presented, which is solid. We do need to support innovation, the safety & benefits of genetic engineering, and politicians supporting scientific evidence. Reading this book has cleared many of the misconceptions I had on the subject of genetic engineering and I appreciate her honesty and tremendous research she dedicated in producing this wonderful book. Highly recommended!

Great book. Interesting view on the topic and very well constructed.

This should be read by everyone opposed to gmos who considers her/himself informed on environmental issues. Ronald and to a lesser extent her husband describe the benefits of gmos for small, often poor farmers and for our air, soil and water. In our bifurcated culture, it is very hard to be an environmenalist fully aware of the dangers of global warming as well as the benefits of gmos. Both Ronald and her husband who is the coauthor are organic gardeners/farmers and so provide a very different perspective from what we are accustomed to. The book is by no means an endorsement of the factory seed production and farming (and in the case of Monsanto, herbicide use) promulgated by giant corporations.

Overall an interesting book with some good information. The recipes seem a little out of place. I would have preferred more of a discussion on the topic at hand, but as it is I believe the book presents good information in support of GE and organic practices and touches nicely on some of the problems facing both types of agricultural cultivation.

A great read. Gives insight to food, where it comes from and why Genetics are such an important part of it... even in the organic world.

An organic farmer and her geneticist husband collaborate on a grounded exploration of the GMO problem. It's clear and convincing, but it won't tell you that GMOs are dangerous. Backed up by empirical data, anecdotal enough to be interesting, If you are actually interested in and unbiased and balanced discussion of these critical issues, you will find the book informative and at times entertaining. If hating on Monsanto is your thing, don't waste your money. Just read the Internet, because everything you get there is true.

EVERYONE who collects Hermes scarves or has a general interest in fashion should own this book. Whilst not a complete catalogue of every design, it offers a wonderful glimpse into this icon of fashion that has endured for 80 some-odd years!

As everything that that belongs to Hermes it is just beautiful

So many art pieces to admire...I love Hermes actually, so I could be biased, but the book itself is wonderful as well and I spend hours admiring the details of scarfs (there are more than100 different designs, each on one full page + variant colours for some of the most famous).

Granted, in the "Foreword", no less than Mr. Pierre-Alexis Dumas says "It is not an exhaustive catalogue of the two thousand or so different designs; after all, why pin down butterflies when you can set them free to fly?". Nevertheless, I was a bit disappointed by the book, as lovely and beautiful as it may be.Even if it didn't feature ALL two thousand+ designs, it would have been nice to see a bit more than what's chronicled in the book, and it doesn't seem to provide a concrete reason/rationale as to why those particular designs were selected over others.None of the pictures or the visuals of the scarves come with notations/references. To figure out what's been shown, you have to go to the back of this not-so-tiny book and read through pages 291 ~ 300. A bit awkward and annoying to say the least.It's a shame since clearly a lot of effort went into designing this good looking publication. I would love to know if there are other books that better chronicle the designs, even if it means a metaphorical capture of those butterflies.

Although written for the younger reader, this is a great book for people of all ages. Has a lot of information on Andretti but I really enjoyed the part of the book that focused on: Statistics, Chronology and Further Reading. A must for Andretti fans.

The artwork is beautiful and imaginative, the stories can be read like folktales. This book is really beautiful. I used this as a tool for teaching saints in Catechism class, and loved the book so much I bought it for my own home. I've read this book to 1st graders and to fourth graders and both grades were fully engaged in the stories.This is a wonderful treasury of stories there are tales of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, The Cinderella Saint, the story of the Three Trees, St. Nicholas, The fourth wiseman, the story of St. Francis and many more.

The previous reviews are about a different book. STandL is not a comprehensive educational manual about the lives of saints. It is a beautifully illustrated collection of inspiring folk tales and saints' stories told in a manner that adults and children will enjoy. This would be a great gift book for ages eight on up, although my five-year-old enjoys having the stories read to him.Update: I see that since my original review, Amazon has removed the reviews about a different book on the lives of saints.

Someone gave this book to us when my daughter was baptized as an infant. It sat on our shelf for about 6 years until she took an interest in it. She LOVES the stories, and is starting to read it herself (although it is a little above her reading level). It's beautifully illustrated and the stories engage the imagination. I recently bought several copies to keep on hand for baptismal and first communion gifts.

This is a beautifully illustrated collection of stories about saints and faith-oriented legends. The text is easy to read and well-suited to children age 9 years on up to adults. The story-telling style is wonderful...a great book for big kids to read to their younger brothers and sisters, and for parents and teachers to share with their classes.

I'm returning to the piano after a 20-year hiatus (grew up with a piano in the house, studied for a dozen years, even had a few students in high school), and suffice it to say, I'm rusty! I never knew about the Dozen a Day series when I was younger, but I wanted to pick up a few books to brush up on sight reading and build muscle in my fingers again. I type a lot, but found that sitting down to play, my typing fingers couldn't hack it on the piano keys. I researched the best books for warm-ups, and this series popped up on a few sites. I love it! The warm-ups are a nice mix of tempos and rhythms, and I appreciate the staccato and legato exercises to strengthen my muscles... and to play with the emotional element of how I play the notes. The songs are quick, and sound nice enough that the neighbors can enjoy when they overhear. It's definitely helping build muscle strength and sight reading back up, as well as muscle memory and tone recognition. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone like me who is returning to the piano and wants something relatively quick and easy to practice... that works!

We love it just like the others, this is not the 1st book in the series you have the pink and the blue before this one.If you know some piano this one is for you otherwise start with the pink book, the level grows perfectly. They are nice warm up exercises. Will buy them all

I got it on Kindle. I am just frustrated that I didn't know what is the difference between book one and pre book! And, you can't see the inside so I can't decide.thanks

My husband is very musical and can play guitar like no one's business. He likes to play keyboard sometimes too but has never taken any piano lessons. He can play by ear with no problem and writes his own music. However, what he wants to learn is fingering and separating left and right hands. Working through the exercises in the Dozen a Day books should help him achieve those goals. Great price here on Amazon as well.

I'm rediscovering this series after not using it for a while. Each exercise is short and teaches a specific technical skill. There is a little stick figure demonstrating each title. Students seem to like them and don't complain like they do with other technical books. I definitely see their overall facility improve. I don't know about practicing a dozen every day, but because they are short (1 or 2 lines) 3 or 4 works great.

I had hoped my daughter would use this more, but I think these exercises, while good for a regular pianist, are maybe a bit much for a beginner who is struggling just to practice every day. I don't play myself, so it may be a great product for someone who is already advanced in skill. Just maybe not for a kid just beginning.

I found this series to be an excellent tool for increasing one's hand/finger control. The exercises get more demanding as you advance thru each book. This was, for me, the second book in the series offered by this author/teacher. I would not recommend this as your starter book in the series if you are a beginning piano student. Start with the "Preparatory Book" before tackling this, "Book One"

This book was what I was looking for for a couple young boys I am teaching. They seem to be able to do the exercises without too much trouble and it helps them limber up for playing other songs. I had used this book as a child. What I didn't remember was that some of the exercises afre really beyond beginner. So, you pick and choose which ones to use, that they will be able to do. But it's a good book overall. I would have liked to be able to view several pages before purchasing.
