Donna M. Mertens is Professor Emeritus, Department of Education, at Gallaudet University. She taught research methods and program evaluation to deaf and hearing students at the MA and PhD levels for over 30 years. She now teaches courses and professional development workshops around the world.She conducts research and evaluation studies on such topics as improvement of special education services in international settings, planning for the inclusion of students with disabilities in neighborhood schools, enhancing the educational experiences of students with disabilities, preventing sexual abuse in residential schools for deaf students, improving access to the court systems for deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and improving the preparation of teachers of the deaf through appropriate use of instructional technology. Her research focuses on improving methods of inquiry by integrating the perspectives of those who have experienced oppression in our society. She draws on the writings of feminists, racial and ethnic minorities, and people with disabilities, as well as Indigenous peoples who have addressed the issues of power and oppression and their implications for research methodology.Dr. Mertens has made numerous presentations at the meetings of the American Educational Research Association, American Evaluation Association, Australasian Evaluation Society, Association for College Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, International Sociological Association, Mixed Methods International Research Association, American Psychological Association, African Evaluation Association, Canadian Evaluation Society, Visitors Studies Association, and other organizations that explore these themes. I really like the organized preview at the beginning of each chapter, and the review at the end of each chapter. I wish book could have been broken down into sections and then evened out the chapters so that some of the chapters would not be so long.

The premise of the book is good (a survey of the types of theories used in program evaluation), however, the text was a bit dense and not really helpful for my uses. Though cases and examples are cited, they were missing too much information to make the examples and cases useful for a novice like myself.

12 Soldiers is an outstanding book about the early stages of the war in Afghanistan.  What I enjoyed about this book is the attention to detail on how our soldiers lived among the Afghanistan people. What they had to go thru, the battles they fought and also a look at their personal lives.  I walk away with an even a greater appreciation for all our men and women in uniform who sacrifice so much so we can enjoy our freedoms. Thank you for your service to our countryI most definitely recommend this book. Â

It did not disappoint. I found it a little confusing at the beginning, but eventually the players moved into place. There were times when the battles seemed to go on a little but eventually I couldn’t put it down. I also enjoyed Stanton’s In Harm’s Way. He is good at getting the feeling of what it’s like to be there and of presenting the cultural perspective of both the US Special Forces and the various Afghani and “foreign fighters”. I was sorry to finish the book - Didn’t want it to end.

A "no holds barred "description of the early part the USA ( CIA\Special Forces played in defeating the Taliban . Extraordinary men doing unbelievable feat's in support of Afghan war lords who they had to win over before there plans to defeat the Taliban had any chance of working.Incredible true story . An excellent job of writing. I truly could not put it down.

A very well written account of arguably the most successful employment of US Military personnell in history. As an Operation Enduring Freedom Vet, The ODA"s represent our best and brightest in their finest hours. Highly recommended! RR

In telling the story of the initial mission into Afghanistan after 9/11, of small Special Forces teams supporting native Afghan forces, the author shows a strategy that worked. Men who lived and fought with the Northern Alliance and respected their customs had more impact than a much larger conventional force would have. An excellent read about brave American and Afghan soldiers and a meeting of very different cultures.

This story brings to life, and memory, the lives of men who gave their all in a battle against those who supported 9/11, but the real story is that of an elite group if individuals, who were trained and adaptable to the context of the situation around them, able to win not just the battle but the hearts of those they served, in a battle that was not their own. This says so much more about the true character of these men then just the heroics they performed, not to belittle them, and sets a standard of what a man of war looks like. In the end, the author provides a great example of what is required to win future wars, where guns are not the "go to" but a diplomatic solution that typically alludes the politician but is part of the arsenal of the Special Forces will bring forth lasting victory

While not the conventional writing style Doug Stanton get you from the first chapter. Then the author goes through in detail the story of each key member of the story and how they got the word. From the beginning and the details like the CIA and the duffle bags of cash, to the politics of war lords, this boook is a great read! This is a complete story, that there was not enough time or money to get it on the big screen. It would have had to to be a mini series. Well wot=Ruth the read to understand Afghanistan in the early days of Us activity.

I was even fortunate enough to design and build Navy warships with the daughter of a family who sought refuge by boat.THIS movie is precisely WHY I prefer to wait and buy the DVD, Bluray (and now 4K) movie so that I can watch the "extra" features that tell some of the back story. Since 1979, Glenn Randall has combined his love of the wilderness with his passion for photography to create stunning landscape images. His intimate knowledge of atmospheric optics, weather conditions, and the landscapes he photographs allows him to find an intersection between magical light and stunning subject matter, which results in exceptional images. Glenn’s work has been included in calendars for Audubon, Avalanche, Barnes & Noble, Brown Trout, Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, and Runner’s World. His images have been published in Audubon, GEO, Outdoor Photographer, Outside, SKI, Los Angeles Times Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, New York Times Magazine, and many others. IMO, Glenn Randall is one of the top 5 landscape and night-sky photographers out there, and his books are always top notch. Unlike many photography writers, he knows both the technical and artistic nuances and can convey them in an easy to understand manner. In addition, Randall honors your interest in the topic and tells you how to do it and provides tons of valuable info without going out on tangents.There are lots of photography books on the market, but very few that actually convey anything beyond the basics. Randall goes far beyond f-stops and equipment and educates you on the physics of light, but in a very understandable manner, enabling you to make educated decisions on how to get the photo you want.He also covers practical topics like how not to get lost at night (or scare yourself to death with an overactive imagination), as well as topics like where and when the Milky Way is best viewed, how to shoot the Aurora, meteor showers, light painting, and shoot star trails. His photos are truly inspirational. And unlike some photography books, each photo has the equipment he used and the settings data.Along with Jennifer Wu’s excellent book, this is all you need to become a night-sky pro (except equipment), and I highly recommend both.One last thing - Rocky Nook needs to recognize that charging outrageous prices for ebooks actually hurts their bottom line instead of helping it. I bought this book only because it’s by Randall, but believe me, at $31, I felt the gouge. Print books are a different matter, but It costs almost nothing to produce an ebook. I would feel better if most of that went to the photographer, but it doesn’t.

I had originally read one of Glenn's previous books entitled "the art, craft, and science of great landscape photography" and this book is a nice complement to that one. I was really excited to read this book having preordered it and I wasn't disappointed. Besides being an excellent photographer, Glenn's style is unique to say the least. He writes about things that most others don't think about. I also appreciate that each photo lists the camera, lens, date, and time the shot was taken which provides a good baseline reference. Basic and advanced post-processing techniques for Lightroom and Photoshop are also covered. I think this would be a good book for people who already have a good handle on daytime photography who want to learn night landscape/astrolandscape photography. Lastly, Glenn lives in Boulder, CO and I also live on the front range of CO and so many of the photographs in the book are taken at places in Colorado and Utah that I photograph. Overall, a wonderful book that I'd highly recommend.

Credit for my purchase of this book goes to Brenda Tharp who, in her book Expressive Nature Photography, devoted a short chapter to photographing stars, which included these words: “many resources for getting much deeper into stars and moonlight photography are available on line and in books.” I like brevity. I have continued to check back to her chapter.Nevertheless, her words led me to Glenn Randall, an author I also respect. His Dusk to Dawn has become my book for details. It is comprehensive and written in plain English, easy to understand. His teaching should apply to any make of camera, assuming a wide-angle lens.Randall tells you how to photograph it all: the milky way, night landscapes, moonlit landscapes, star trails, the aurora borealis, meteor showers, lunar eclipses. He tells you how to determine the right night for shooting, how to select your location, and how to do everything in the dark from getting to your location and back to fumbling with the buttons on your camera to what to look for in your histogram. After your night into morning is over, he takes you through Photoshop and Lightroom step by step and tweaks to get results you might never have imagined.If I had a problem, it was with Randall’s style of presenting procedures. He writes long paragraphs, and some of his paragraphs contain more than one step. It is frustrating for me to hold my Kindle on my lap and try to get back and forth between the mess of words on my Kindle screen and the things to click or slide on my computer screen. I hope I am not violating copyright laws, but I made paper copies of the procedures I use and marked them up with a pen, numbering the steps. That helped.I have never read other books or chapters on photographing stars, so I cannot say if this is the best. All I can say is that this one is mighty fine. I’m amazing my friends with the pictures it helped me get. Randall is an excellent mentor. Brenda Tharp is pretty good too.

Glenn Randall is a gifted and knowledgable writer, photographer, teacher, and workshop leader. You will find some of his best writing, photography and teaching in "Dusk to Dawn," a complete guide to night sky photography. If you want to learn how to make stunning images from sunset through sunrise, you won't find a better source than Glenn Randall.

One of the best book that I have read. I shoot photos to lunar eclipse based in this book and the reference was very well For nigth photographer is very good.

This is the best overall book I have read to help with nighttime landscape photography. Glenn has written another book which is very readable yet rich in detail. If unlike me you’re only buying one book for the purpose of night photography make it this one. I cannot imagine regretting doing so!

I recommend if you enjoyed Sunaya’s books but are looking for something a little darker.Minimal spoilers below…….……………………………………..………………….………...Some things to expect: Annia’s own adventures that are intertwined in Solantha life (you get small visits from previous characters), a possible love interest for Annia (or so I hope it turns into that in book #2), magic, shifters, enforcer work, enemies, steampunk elements, and lots of action.If a strong female lead is what you’re looking for, Annia is it! I said this in my novella review- this series is a little darker than The Baine Chronicles, so beware going in. If you are not sure, check out Called by Magic: a Baine Chronicles World Novella (Mischief and Magic Book 0). For those who want to dive in and are not familiar with The Baine World, there is a glossary in the back to help familiarize yourself with the world.I’m loving this series and cannot wait the future installments (I’m ready for at least five books, can we make that happen Jasmine?). I finished this book in less than 24 hours.Parental warnings/trigger advisory: death, fighting, swear words throughout- s x10, f x19, hell x29, damn and pissed used numerous times as well, kiss on the mc’s knuckles from a guy, multiple pregnant women, sex slaves (being held prisoners/naked), mention of rape at a party (Annia hunts the guy down who raped the girl), gang activity, torture of a young man that results in death.

Well worth the wait to finally get to read a book from Annia's point of view. Getting more of Rylan is just an added bonus. The two make a great detective team. Annia has to struggle with her new magical abilities and decide how and when she is comfortable using them. Seeing how she finds her way to using her abilities for good and also working with others when she has always been a lone wolf is so enjoyable. I can't wait to hear about her next adventure!

Seems somehow 'shallower'; as if the author made an outline and wrote a few chapters herself, but let her schoolgirl cousin write most of the book. Somehow has much less punch and action than the earlier books. I get the impression that this was written not to expand and further develop the story, but rather because the author wanted to fund a new Mercedes or similar base need. Still worth reading, but it will NOT pull you into the Baine chronicles world, or keep you up reading late because you are immersed in the book. Nowhere near as good as the Fenris book. In summary - It's OK.

Oh my goodness......... this was a FANTASTIC read! I’ve been itching to dig back into the Baine world, and I love the new direction! Annia is proving to be quite the character, and I can’t wait to see what all she gets up to! This promises to have even more shenanigans than the Baine Chronicles, and I can’t wait to see what happens next! Love, love, loved it and can’t wait for the next! Thank you for the opportunity to review this gem!

Fans of the Baine Chronicles will be thrilled with this new edition to the universe. Following Annia this time we find her having a hard time fitting smoothly back into her old life after coming back from Southia. Garalina is trying to convince Annia of the benefits of magic use in day to day life, the question is, will Annia decide she agrees? Or continue to fight against it's use.

This is a brand new series from Jasmine Walt in the world of Sunaya. The world is the same with the same rules as the earlier books and holds together well. The new characters introduced in this series are fun and sassy and fun to read about. There’s plenty of action going on. Definitely a book you should get.

I loved the Baine Chronicles; this series is based in the same setting and brings in some of my favorite characters from the other books too. I love your writing - please keep writing your mystical, wonderful series. I will read every single one one of them!

I have been waiting for more books in the Baine Chronicles and this one did not disappoint. I like the quirky relationships of the Tua and how Annia has to learn to deal with funneling someone else's power.

It gives you an overview of all possible career paths you can embark on, being a PhD in biosciences. It includes paths you had not thought about and goes deep to explain what they consist, what are the weaknesses/strengths of each and what type of professional fits better in those. The analysis is realistic and full of god references. It also gives recommendations on how to apply to positions, do cover letters, CVs/resumes and so on. All in all, i recommend it for anyone who is in the last year of his PhD or postdoc and wants to start in time planning the rest of his professional life.

As a Biomedical Engineering PhD candidate, I really had no idea what jobs there were after academia.This was very reassuring that 1) there are other types of jobs out there and 2) my particular strengths, weaknesses, and values align with some job out there, somewhere.It's not the end all -expect to do some follow up research after reading - but it is very helpful in at least getting a direction. I feel much more confident in starting the job hunt now.This book is targeted most towards people that would be expecting a career in biotech/pharm industry.

This book is a very thorough review of current employment options outside of academia for recent bio graduates. It covers several different biotech areas providing detailed info about each job type and what it consists of, what characteristics render an individual potentially successful with that job, what a day in that job is like, what training is required, etc. Great for those of us in academia looking to transition to industry, but not sure where to start or what we would like to do....if that sounds familiar this is the book for you!

I highly recommend "Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development" by Toby Freedman as a comprehensive resource for those of us seeking information and looking into transitioning from academia to industry.I came across with this book very recently at the Career Development Center of Stanford University's website as a suggested reading material for biotechnology careers. I wish I had known this book earlier! Clearly, it would be most appropriate if this resource is widely mentioned to grad students and postdocs through career development workshops across universities. One realizes pretty quickly that how many different types of opportunities out there, which could potentially be the next step to take. In that sense, I found the book is inspiring!The book gives in-depth information about career paths, detailed description of types of positions, key personality aspects for a success in a chosen field in biotechnology industry. Also, Dr. Freedman provides helpful advice on preparation of CV which is illustrated with a template, conducting informational interviews and business etiquette to follow. Great help highlighting with key steps to prepare for a carefully planned rewarding career. The book is a must have, and I am already spreading the word to my colleagues!

This is a great resource for those of us already in the industry as well as those thinking to make an entry. The introductory chapters are spot on for guiding applicants for a first industry job. The subsequent sections detailing specific types of positions are structured in such a way that one can quickly evaluate the suitability of a particular career path in relation to one's own goals, skills and temperament, and take specific actions to embark on a given path. I still consult these chapters whenever considering ways to expand my skillset and further my career development within a small company, where we all have multiple overlapping roles.
