Review

“George Grella dissects the creative process engineered by Miles Davis album, delves into the motivations that led its creator to break with the basics of swing and incorporate influences from rock and unprecedented use of recording techniques in jazz . Grella also devotes two chapters to study the outstanding technical features of each of the six items on the double LP … and explores with passion, wit and analytical rigor [the] constellation of musical, social and psychological forces that came together to produce one of the most revolutionary works of contemporary music.” - El Intruso (translated from Spanish)

Well done. The unresolvable problem for Miles' writers is that even academic presses require a certain degree of accessibility for readers who are not professional musicians--that's reasonable, but it also requires writers to "paint a picture" of what's going on in the music rather than actually describing and analyzing it.

I agree with all the reviews so far. I found the specific analysis/description of all the tracks in the chapter starting on page 64 to be very well done. I would like to add some details that Grella neglects. In "Pharoah's Dance" at 15:00 you can hear someone laughing right after the splice. It sounds to me like the laughter of great satisfaction with what is happening, as if saying, "Yeah, this is so cool." Then in "Bitches Brew" there is and interesting portion of Miles' solo that has been intricately cut and spliced by Teo Macero (presumably). Starting at 10:32, portions of the next 10 seconds of the solo are repeated three times. After the first 5 seconds (10:32 to 10:37) it is repeated but this time going 1 second longer to 10:43; then it is repeated a second time but now for 10 seconds, at which point all but one note (!) of that 10-second portion of the solo gets repeated yet again. Finally, on page 84 in the section on "Spanish Key" Grella says, "Shorter sounds alternately purposeful and aimless." OK, but I would describe Shorter's solo from 8:04 to 8:21 as brilliant--a series of upward phrases each syncopated differently and each starting upward from a lower note. Obviously for me this is an album that has stood up to careful listening for decades. Congratulations to Grella for writing an entire book that gives Bitches Brew the attention it deserves.

There are plenty of details to accompany the analysis of this iconic recording, and G. Grella is an attentive listener who will guide you through them with rigor and precision. But this is mainly a book about the art of jazz in America and its power of transformation written in splendid prose by someone that has the ability and the knowledge to look at, and express, the many facets of this cultural phenomenon.

Terrific blow by blow, second by second precise of this seminal work by Miles Davis. Essential to helping us understand the vast importance of this work.

It's a good analysis of the album. Wish there'd been some more info about the actual recording sessions (my constant complaint with this series), but I'd still recommend it.

Thoroughly researched, meticulously detailed this is must read for fans of Miles Davis, jazz fusion or just great writing. Cannot say enough good things about this text. A wonderful addition to the 33 1/3 series.

Great book. The author does a great job of breaking down the music and the cultural context and impact of Bitches Brew on the jazz and pop music landscape at the time and beyond. Highly recommended.

Exactly as described, thanks.

Review

“Isacoff . . . untangles the complexities . . . with the aplomb of a virtuoso pianist playing scales.” —The New York Times Book Review“A thrilling story that is as accessible as it is absorbing. . . . This is a whirlwind tour through the history of Western culture, told with flair and grace.” —National Review“Immensely entertaining, original and informative. [Temperament’s] most persuasive weapon is the unquenchable passion of its author.” —The Economist “Admirable. . . . [Isacoff] writes engagingly. . . . [about] a time when there existed a glorious synthesis of music and mathematics, and in the imaginations of scientists and philosophers and musicians it wove the entire universe into a grand design." —The New Republic“Charming. . . . As much a whirlwind tour of Western culture’s big ideas as it is a musicological investigation.” —Los Angeles Times“The pleasure here is that it gives readers a glimpse of the oceanic depths of musical metaphors and mysteries still unsolved by cognitive science and evolutionary psychology.” —Wilson Quarterly“A sweeping history of medieval and Renaissance European intellectual achievement, in which the question of tuning assumes a speaking part. . . . Temperament should appeal not only to music lovers but also to fans of cultural and scientific history.” —Time Out New York“An astounding and accessible journey through the culture-defining narrative hidden in arcane music theory. Isacoff does a wondrous job.” —The Onion“This lucid, humanist study is as much fun to read as a murder mystery.” —San Jose Mercury News“[Brings] together aspects of science, philosophy, history, poetry, religion, and music in a compact yet compelling narrative.” —Library Journal

vers realize that the arrangement of notes on today’s pianos was once regarded as a crime against God and nature, or that such legendary thinkers as Pythagoras, Plato, da Vinci, Galileo, Kepler, Descartes, Newton and Rousseau played a role in the controversy. Indeed, from the time of the Ancient Greeks through the eras of Renaissance scientists and Enlightenment philosophers, the relationship between the notes of the musical scale was seen as a key to the very nature of the universe. In this engaging and accessible account, Stuart Isacoff leads us through the battles over that scale, placing them in the context of quarrels in the worlds of art, philosophy, religion, politics and science. The contentious adoption of the modern tuning system known as equal temperament called into question beliefs that had lasted nearly two millenia–and also made possible the music of Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy, and all who followed. The centuries-old struggle between perfection in sonic concord and pragmatism in its application to the keyboard and its insistence on a 12-step octave, musical sounds perfect and elemental, the laws of physics tamed and tethered to the expedient of chromaticism, Temperament illustrates all aspects of history and philosophy as all contemporary forces and minds were passionate on this very subject. There are historical and philosophical revelations on every page, and who knew that the first tempered chromatic scale predated keyboards altogether? In China, a set of bamboo pipes, 12 to commemorate and ritualize the monthly chapters of the year. And the battle rages on: there's a pretty substantial Afterword taking up the ongoing controversies and innovations in micro-tonal music. An inspired and inspiring book.

Stuart Isacoff's Temperament: How Music Became a Battleground for the Great Minds of Western Civilization is a good general introduction to the vexing question of how to tune a piano and other keyboard instruments. He does a good job of describing the mathematics behind the problem in a non-technical manner. However perhaps the best parts of the book are where he describes how the questions of musical tunings become part of the history of western civilization. People really cared about this and what it said about the relationship of man to god and how the universe worked. Euclid, Newton, Alchemy, Copernicus, Galileo and other heavyweights of intellectual history all participated in the struggle to devise the perfect tuning system.Entertaining and accessible. If you've wondered about the differences between just tuning, equal tuning, and well tuning, this book is for you.

Loved the history and felt as though the men through history were contemporaries, although they spanned the centuries with their questions on developing temperament. The book was a gold mine of interesting information on the links between science, music, art, and math (and the "string theory" of modern scientific thought). If I was still teaching school, it would be a core book for the development of my lessons in any of the subjects above, to bring alive my classes. I was excited to talk about it to my friends today. When I listen to music, I appreciate music that tells a story and paints a picture as when listening to "The Warsaw Concerto"[ASIN:B0000060DC Warsaw Concerto]] I also love music that is really special, as is the arrangement of La Mer, which accompanied the end of the movie in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier,Spy".[ASIN:B0059XTTW8 Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy]] I am a lay person who sympathizes with the thoughts that Mr Isacoff expresses in,The Afterword, of this book. It is impossible to satisfy everyone. Is it really possible to reach what we think of as perfection, or is perfection different to each of us? Just as I suspect perception might be different to each of us.Madlyn Fafardauthor

A great book, but understand what it is before you buy it. It addresses the HISTORY of temperament and tuning, not temperament itself. Specifically, it focuses on how an understanding of tuning and temperament followed the growth of intellectual development in western civilization. The author does not explain the details of historic temperaments and tuning. If your interest is about historic temperaments themselves, you will be disappointed. The authors writing style is good. He writes in a story telling fashion, has a sense of plot and a number of points of climax, which really helps to keep the readers interest. There is no prerequisite knowledge needed, so the general reader should be able to follow this book. However, there are a lot of characters and I got them confused sometimes. It helps to jot a few notes about each character as they are introduced.

It's been about four years since I read this book, but I remember that it was an excellent read. I was extremely interested in the material, being ignorant of almost all of it before beginning the book, and I thought it was well-written to boot. Isacoff presented the information well-- providing diagrams and pictures where necessary for understanding certain things, such as the mathematical basis for fifths and octaves. He also included a great deal of history surrounding the main argument (the main point of which was whether to retain the perfect fifth or sacrifice it for the perfect octave) and so he therefore included aspects of religion, politics, and science which were contemporary at the time. The book is also replete with amusing historical anecdotes, making it quite an entertaining read, rather being dry material. For one specific example, Isacoff discusses how music was taught in earlier medieval times with no written music at all-- thus there was a strong need for a verbal scale to teach new choir members how to sing in harmony. To this purpose, a specific verse in Latin became a main teaching standard, with the next note in the scale at the beginning of each verse. Eventually they sung just the words as a shortened version, and then abbreviated those words. Those abbreviations are now "Do, Re, Mi..." --the first two letters of the original full verses in Latin (except for "Do", which I believe was "Ut", originally.)This kind of historical information, for me, was what made this book so fascinating to read, and opened my eyes to why things "are they way they are" in music today.Highly recommended.

A fascinatingly informed view of the evolution of temperament. Without evangelizing for any particular system, Isacoff provides a musical and philosophical basis for the tuning systems which have ebbed and flowed over the centuries. An excellent read for those more than just mildly curious.

This is a must-read if you are a true fan of true mob stories. If you watch the t.v. show "Mob Wives" you will enjoy this storyline even more. The author of this series of mafioso books, Joe Bruno, is well versed in his ability to make the reader understand the lives of the underworld and its high or not so high profile mobsters, their wives, lovers, family and the whole nine yards.

so so book....not too interesting..never finished it.

Don't waste your time or money. I'm glad I got this for free or I would demand my money back.

VERY QUICK DELIVERY

I haven't read yet.

Great storytelling and insight into the lives of the other sides of gangsters! Behind closed doors stories def a purchase I loved!

This was a decent read...passed the time but was VERY repetitive. Had some good info but wished it had more.

Not exactly a bevy of new info here if you've read very much mobspeak or watched even one episode of "Mob Wives". It's not a Pileggi writing by far, but I guess it doesn't masquerade as such. Pretty forgettable short read I would say, especially since right now I can't recall much of it! I would have perused it before this review but my Kindle ridded itself of it right after I hit the 'delete' button! Happy reading folks!

Review

"Finalist for the Theatre Library Association Award for Outstanding Book in Recorded or Broadcast Performance""Williams makes the best theoretical case for descriptive representation for marginalized groups to achieve democratic equality. Her review of democratic theory is both exhaustive and masterful."---Katherine Tate, Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences"It seems like a long leap to make 'from Lillian Gish to . . . Leonardo Dicaprio and from Uncle Tom to Rodney King,' but in this dazzling, benchmark work . . . Williams does it with panache and enormous insight. . . . This is a vital contribution to American studies as well as film and race studies." (Publishers Weekly)"But the real elegance is in her thinking. . . . [Williams's writing impresses] wherever melodrama lands, it brings the same set of concerns, an Playing the Race Card is at it protean best when it is tracing these from medium to medium."---Lisa Kennedy, Village Voice"For any honest discussion about race relations in America, [Williams] argues, we must first acknowledge the indeterminate influence of melodrama. Conscientiously researched . . . this insightful book is essential for academic libraries and students in film studies." (Library Journal)"In her intellectually rousing book, Playing the Race Card, Williams find the root of [melodramatic] characterizations throughout American popular culture. . . . Such images, she argues, continue to feed attitudes of racial empathy and enmity. . . . With its thought-provoking analysis and textbook scholarship, Playing the Race Card is a . . . passionately crafted book. But Williams greatest contribution may be liberating a discussion of race from the incendiary rhetoric and polemics that accompany such a discourse. She creates a new dialogue about how popular entertainment has fostered racial sympathy as well as mistrust, and how those images still shape us today."---Renee Graham, The Boston Globe"[Williams] dispenses with the cant and silliness that tangles much academic talk about racial matters. . . . Steeped in the details of text and context, she invites the reader to see familiar works in fresh ways. Williams's achievement is to recapture the complexity of our tangled racial history without sanitizing racism."---Jonathan Rieder, New York Times Book Review"Williams offers a fresh and insightful exploration of some of the roots of the American racial dilemma. . . . Well written and persuasively argued." (Choice)"A work that is extremely valuable to historians who wish to enhance the sophistication of their own thinking about teaching with film and other visual media. . . . I believe the author succeeds at what she sets out to do. In such a large, sweeping, and ambitious book as this, that is high praise indeed."---Alecia P. Long, H-Net Reviews"This book would be valuable just for its scholarly insights, sharp contextual readings, well-selected illustrations, and imaginative genealogy of melodramatic practices across various eras. What gives it special urgency is that by locating those moments when new media (print, film, TV, video) were shaping new ways of conceiving race, Williams creates a moving picture of racial melodrama in the United States that manages to connect the polemic of Uncle Tom's Cabin to the . . . televised O. J. Simpson murder trial"---Kurt Eisen, American Literature

From the Back Cover

"Playing the Race Card possesses all the boldness, high intelligence, and far-reaching revisionism one has come to expect from the author of the brilliant Hard Core and other path-breaking work in film studies. Linda Williams here insists on the general importance of the melodramatic mode to our understanding of the United States' ongoing racial predicament. Her arguments are extremely compelling, not least because she executes them with such thoroughgoing smartness and prodigious learning."--Eric Lott, University of Virginia"Linda Williams's book is a beautifully written, meticulously researched, and conceptually lucid engagement with the genres of painful feeling that organize racial fantasy in the United States. It joins the works of Michael Rogin, Eric Lott, and Ann Douglas as a major statement about the founding conventions of representation and cross-racial encounter in the U.S. twentieth century."--Lauren Berlant, University of Chicago"A tour de force of cultural analysis. The subject of Playing the Race Card is at once urgent and entertaining. Linda Williams's book is poised to do for film studies what Toni Morrison and others have so famously done for American literature: to reveal the ghost in the machine, the role of 'race' in the making of American popular culture."--Susan Gillman, University of California, Santa Cruz"A strikingly accessible book that makes a timely appearance, now that discussions about race and representation have developed a heightened immediacy. Elegantly written and meticulously researched, this book combines scholarly rigor with clarity and insight."--Valerie Smith, University of California, Los Angeles

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I'm somewhat interested in film studies but more so interested in race and I found this analysis of the melodramatic depictions of race across the mediums of stage, film, and trials to be very enlightening. One of the greatest things about Linda Williams is that she does not condemn or overpraise. She analyzes everything dialectically. While one might abhor, for instance, blackface minstrelsy that denigrated African Americans, Linda Williams makes the point that it was first through blackface that whites gained a sense of the humanity of blacks, all the while making fun of them. The style of the book is readable. Linda Williams is an intellectual but she manages to make her work accessible to those who have not studied film academically. Familiarity with the concept of modernism would help with the first chapter, but is not necessary. If you have studied Morrison, Fanon, Nietzsche, Benjamin and the other thinkers Linda Williams makes brief references to, you will probably get a richer understanding of this book. However, speaking for someone who is only moderately familiar with those intellectuals, I nevertheless gained a deep understanding of the book. Linda Williams is a very competent writer.

Needed this for a class on race and diversity. Interesting, extremely poignant, even more so now than when I took the class.

This is Film Studies of the first order. Williams takes the idea of melodrama as a mode and intersects it with issues of race and its representation. According to her, in conjuction with the popularity or in the legitimization of a particular medium in American society, the representations of the black male and female bodies take on center stage and gain new significations. The book starts out with Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and shows how it stays and strays away from the conventions of the Victorian novel. It then focuses on the Stowe's characterization of the black bodies and how they elicited the sympathy of the readers. Next, it shows how Dixon, with his novel "The Clansmen,' either changes or reverses Stowe's characterizations and themes to elicit another kind of response. However, it is D.W. Griffith's adaptation of the novel, "Birth of the Nation" that had a powerful influence in the society's imagination. Not only did the film legitimize the medium as an art form, it also gave the public a new way of understanding race relations in America. The book covers both the novel and the movie adaptation of "Gone With the Wind" and other cultural texts and ends with the televised trial of O.J. Simpson while keeping on the other eye issues of representation. Linda Williams' project is both multi-disciplinary and multi-media and she weaves them together in a rich study of melodrama as a cultural mode and the ever evolving nature of race relations and representations in our society. She wittily uses Henry James' imagery of the 'leaping fish' to show how melodrama dynamically moves from one medium to the next. Each time it makes an appearance in a big way, it also entails a recasting of black and white or racial representations. Williams achievement lies in her ability to pull together a variety of texts and approaches to engage upon the central issue of race. And she does this in clear, well-written prose. Although this is more like a work of cultural criticism, the book also opens up the possibilities of film studies as a powerful lens or a way of approaching cinema-related queries and dealing with socio-historical matters.

I really enjoyed this book. Along with debunking the paleodiet garbage with current research there is a dose of humor injected throughout the book. This makes it a great read.

Fascinating topic. The book is well-researched and compelling, but the author tries to hard to be fun (analogies/metaphors, personal anecdotes, jokes, etc.). It seems like an effort to make the book read more like a magazine than an academic paper, but I just found it awkward and distracting. Still, it's a great read.

Most of the strongly negative reviews are unconvinced regarding Zuk's principal argument against Paleo diets: primarily that human evolution occurs all the time, and has already accommodated the change to a diet that includes grains and dairy. There is actually quite a lot of merit in her argument, and an overview of the facts confirm it. While many more people in developed regions suffer from an array of metabolic syndrome disorders and immune dysfunction that could be helped with improved diet, there are nevertheless many people who live long, healthy lives who eat bread and drink milk and complain about eating vegetables every single day of their lives. Paleo diet creators seem to have dismissed these very hardy, healthy people among us, who seem to get by just fine regardless of what they eat. There are many, many people in this category, and they have apparently adapted well to a wider diet than paleo would recommend. That said, Paleo diets should not be dismissed, either. Especially for those with disorders like celiac disease or lactose intolerance, Paleo diets are healthy alternatives. In fact, Paleo diets are not likely unhealthy at all for most folks. But, Paleo dieting is expensive, and could be environmentally devastating today, especially if 7 billion people adopted it.The parts of Zuk's Paleofantasy that I found most untenable were the chapters on evolution of human behaviour, Paleofantasy love and the Paleofantasy family. Zuk chatters on about modern humans, and our behaviourly very-distant relatives, the baboons and apes, and even seahorses, because the fact is we really have no idea what sex and family were like in the Paleolithic. We quickly overlook the fact that virtually all of our knowledge of this age comes from a handful of burials scattered around the globe, and dead people don't tell us much about their social behaviour. Even the burials themselves are often in very poor condition and difficult to interpret. The rare instances where we might perhaps get a tangible but imperfect glimpse into the Paleolithic family (Sungir, for example) are not mentioned by Zuk at all. Studies of modern hunter-gatherers, while not technically Paleolithic, help somewhat, but it's really quite a stretch to project modern-day !Kung San behaviour to northwestern Europe 30,000 years ago. Scientists who ponder such things earnestly want to know, they want to know badly, but in this area we still know virtually nothing. We can probably surmise that sexual behaviour and the concept of "family" varied widely at any given time in the Paleolithic, much as they do now. That's about it. But science is about proof, not conjecture, and in this area proof is difficult if not impossible to come by. So these chapters would have been better left out.

The author is careful not to weigh in too heavily on whether the so-called "paleo" or "cave-man" diet is good for you, and doesn't waste time arguing with those who swear it's the only thing that's ever worked for weight loss. Neither does she offer the one true diet/lifestyle alternative that will work for everyone. Rather, she uses her considerable knowledge in the field of evolutionary biology to examine the claim(s) that modern humans "evolved" to eat (and sleep and have sex and live) like a cave man (and by implication, haven't evolved since). Her writing is engaging and smooth, and her sources are well documented. If you know anything at all about evolution, you pretty much know what her conclusion is going to be: it's a little more complicated than the "cave-man" diet/lifestyle advocates would have you believe. Evolution of such traits as the ability to digest lactose or carbohydrates is perfectly possible within the time frames and among the populations where they have appeared. She corrects some of the major misunderstandings of the evolutionary process that seem to be going around (again) lately in the popular science world, and she does so with a sense of humor and without attacking people (paleo advocates, for example) too hard.I highly recommend this book

Paleofantasy is a treasure for all those who are interested, and would like to understand, the evolution of human nutrition. With facts and wit, Zuk blows apart the clouds of the believers. As in her previous books, Zuk brings together the work of international scientists of different disciplines, making the reader aware of the many aspects of evolution and nutrition that have been researched, and what has been revealed as facts.Unlike food fantasies that promote to limit our diet, this book is refreshing to all who love food and take being healthy seriously. It is exciting to learn how our tolerance for digesting milk is part of our evolution, and what was found in the plaque of ancient humans.Zuk’s humor makes it so much fun to learn about the facts - and to accept what we do not know. Most of all, Paleofantasy points out how evolution has never been a smooth process, never a time when we, or any other living organism, had been living in perfect harmony with the environment. And we’re still in the process of evolution…

There are so many fad diets, so many fad programs for improving your health, none based on actual research or evidence. Some may, in fact, be designed only to enrich the person who promotes the diet or the program. Here is a well written, engrossing, eminently understandable response to the so-called "paleo" fad based on actual science and actual evidence. Anyone thinking of embarking on one of these fad programs should read this first.

While browsing in a book store, Andrea McNichol’s book “Handwriting Analysis-Putting It to Work for You” caught my eye, and I bought it, curious about what one could tell from someone’s handwriting. I started reading it that afternoon, and continued into the wee hours, too fascinated to put the book down.In this well thought out and compelling introduction to graphology, McNichol covers each topic in a concise and entertaining way that drives home the common sense and logic underpinning this science. Readers are allowed to reach their own conclusions about each question she poses, before comparing it to the correct answer. McNichol also presents the handwritings of suspects from real past cases, where she identified the guilty parties by looking at their handwriting. Again, she allows readers to make their own deductions as to which one is the culprit, before checking the correct answer and the reasoning behind it.“Handwriting Analysis-Putting It to Work for You” sparked my interest, and left me eager to learn more. It was the catalyst for my subsequent studies in beginning and advanced graphology, and for my eventually becoming a certified graphologist. Those who are skeptical about the validity of handwriting analysis are likely to come away from this read surprised and intrigued, if not completely hooked by the direct and logical way in which Andrea McNichol builds her case for the accuracy of this effective people reading tool called graphology.

Exceeded my expectations. This book couldn't have been written better. So informative and thorough, and it's laid out in a manner that is perfect. All the information builds on itself chapter after chapter. Very fun to read! I truly cannot look at handwriting or signatures without analyzing it. It's incredible how much you will learn in this one book. I also bought handwriting analysis for dummy's and it was horrible I couldn't even get through it. It's a mess. All the information is jumbled, so I suggest you go with Andrea's book!

I am teaching forensics and I thought it would be useful for the students. It is not exactly scientific and not totally applicable. I believe the questions are a little coercive. It shows you a sample and asks, "does this sample makes you think of someone stingy/economical or larger than life". If all the writing is on one corner of the paper you say stingy/economical. It does not necessarily mean that this is the first idea that comes to your mind when you see the writing sample...

I bought this for my teen daughter for her birthday just for fun and she loves it! It's well written, thorough, detailed, and a bit addictive. She wanted to analyze everybody's handwriting after using it on her own! I was amazed at how accurate it was. I didn't get it for anything serious but this was beyond what I expected!

I really enjoyed this book. I bought it as a local professional had told me that he used handwriting analysis for hiring employees over his long career and had great success with this method. This book provided clear and easily accessible insight for the universal principles behind the use of graphology and quickly gets the reader a basic foundation. Andrea McNichol's writing is entertaining, light and helpful. This book does not pretend to be an in depth study of the science behind graphology and hits the mark with 5 stars for what it does purport to do 'Putting it to work for you'.

The book is fantastic! I never knew there was so much intricacy in handwriting.Who knew that my personality was an A typical, perfectionist who is reserved about spending money. My wife, that's who.Other than her, I bought this book to learn about my clients personality better and also discovered a lot about myself.Cool book.

I am OBSESSED with this book! It made me see myself in a new perspective. It showed both the good and bad parts. I am going to use this book to tweak what I would like to fix. It also gave me insight to children’s hands writing and made me eager to learn more. I wish there was courses I could take near me. As a parent you definitely want to give your child all the tools to succeed so I will be purchasing the children’s book by Andrea! Looking forward to reading it! MUST BUY!

Reading this book was quick and easy and it does a pretty good job of going through the different explanations and examples. There were a few examples where I thought it was a little hard to see exactly what she was talking about, and red arrows or circles might have helped.Overall I think the book did an excellent job of explaining graphology to someone new to it. Explanations were simple and fun - great stories behind some of the examples!I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in learning how to read handwriting. The only area it did not touch on was the concept of changing your writing, change your life - it briefly mentioned it as a possibility but nothing more.

Flow: The Cultural Story of Menstruation, by Susan Kim

From Publishers Weekly

Written like a sassy young women's magazine with first-person narrative and the occasional astonished exclamation point, a normally taboo topic claims attention with the surprising-and sometimes horrifying-history of cultural reactions to menstruation (Pliny believed menstrual blood was toxic to flora and fauna), feminine "hygiene," and the enticing yet under-researched future of period-free birth control methods. Sprinkled throughout with entertainingly naïve ads from each era of the 20th-century as well as many references to scientific findings, author and graphic designer Stein and Kim, a graphic novelist (Circle of Spies) and writer of the play adaptation of The Joy Luck Club, evoke a light-hearted tone about their serious subject. They cover everything from menarche to menopause, including what menstruation is (which receives an outstandingly clear explanation) plus an enlightening discussion of the pad v. tampon debate, which at bottom was a sophisticated marketing strategy. Perfect for a preteen's introduction to adulthood and for women of all ages, this is guaranteed to spark conversation about old early sanitary technology (belts and pins), the pad's evolution, during WWI, when nurses found cellulose bandages more absorbent than plain cotton, and whether this universal female experience is a blessing, a curse-or just part of life. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Stein and Kim wonder whether, in all of human history, anything else has been so reviled, so honored, so fear-inspiring, so mysterious (even to its hostesses), or so marketable as menstruation. Throughout millennia, the monthly act of shedding blood has stymied everyone from religious leaders to philosophers to physicians and scientists. Until the Industrial Revolution, that is, when feminine-care marketers began hauling in carloads of profits on the strength of proving to women that their monthly body function needed this gizmo or that potion, all the while referring to menstruation only in the most oblique terms—all that even a sumptuary society allowed. But at long last, along have come these two women to give us as plain-speaking, comprehensive, and witty a compendium of menarcheal information and reference as we’ve ever had. There is probably no better book for moms who want their daughters to respect themselves in every aspect, and for female preteens and teens who would never say a word about their moms reading a book about menses but surely would like several sneak peeks into its pages. One can only ask Stein and Kim, What took you so long? --Donna Chavez

Very enjoyable book- fun to read and illustrated with sometimes terrifying old ads for menstruation products. I got a kick out of the conversational tone of the book. However, it could have included more information regarding what is 'normal' in menstruation, to demystify some of the process. All in all it was a fun and informative read. I would recommend it for an older teen or young woman who may still be confused about the process. I would not recommend it for a young girl at her menarche- she'd be better served by a copy of "Our Bodies, Our Selves."

This is a fantastic book on many many levels. Elissa Stein and Susan Kim take on the discomfort of discussing "that time of month," talk about the awkwardness and then examine menstruation in a way that is sharp, smart, serious, laugh-out-loud funny, respectful, irreverent and best of all, friendly. It's not a science book, but it's not supposed to be one, but as a 40year old dude, I know a lot more about what goes on every 28 days today than I did before reading this book. They look at the crazy misbeliefs about menstruation throughout history... crazy and still relevant today - some of Pliny the Elder's hypotheses and attitudes about the subject can still be found today, to some extent. In the context of the mysterious uterus (once believed to be a hamster-sized organ that travelled all over the body), they look at PMS, and medical treatments for "womens problems" including the doctor treating "hysteria" with "hysterical paroxysm" (including some involving water jets that today would be blocked by Net Nanny). It's not all fun and games, though, because the treatments also include hysterectomies and the fatal results of hormone-replacement therapy for post-menopausal women (once believed to be a benefit, the human trial of hormone treatments was stopped in 2002 when it turned out to significantly increase health problems across the board). My favorite favorite favorite parts of this book discuss the role of marketing and advertisements for feminine products and how these have "educated" us over the years. Commercials with mysterious blue liquids! White swimsuits and beach images! The book is filled with gorgeous copies of print advertisements from the last century, from when Kotex was first advertised (convenient way to sell off bandage material from WWI), to images of freedom and freshness (white swimsuits and all) from the 70's and 80's to today. These are fascinating to see, especially with Stein and Kim discussing these ads and the attitudes of the times. As something that really should be in a note for the paperback edition, when Apple's iPad was announced, the internet exploded with menstrual humor, but most hilarious of all was the official demo video that practically, unintentionally use much of the imagery from the last few decades of femcare advertising. I guess the marketing guys at Apple never paid attention to those campaigns.Fantastic book - five stars. Really, it's a must-read, an excellent excellent book.

Should be called Flow: Some Historical Tidbits Interspersed with Ranting Plus More Information About the Mechanics of Menstruation and Menopause Than Should Really Be Included.Although the book starts out with the promised historical content, it quickly shifts into blaming men for the existence of everything from sexism to PMS, saying that women would never start wars, and preaching at the reader. It's chock-full of statements like "We're not saying that PMS doesn't exist" (after pages of saying PMS was made up by evil male doctors) and "We're not saying you have to enjoy menopause" (after pages of making one feel bad about even considering hormone replacement therapy.)For $14 on the Kindle, I could have bough ten much better books. This is a rip-off and makes me want to stand barefoot in a kitchen somewhere, just to be irksome.

WOW what a fascinating book about a taboo topic! Three out of every four Americans surveyed say this subject should never be an acceptable topic for discussion.

Effective for scaring men away. Five stars!

i enjoyed reading the horror stories of how periods were treated in the past. however, i felt this book would be better as a coffee table book, and i downloaded the kindle version. it was suggested for the kindle dx, but its really better on the computer, in color. since its so good in color, i suggest getting it in print.

i think every woman have to read this book!

Very informative but entertaining!! I just loved the old advertisements for feminine products! Still not sure what to do about feminine product waste?? Tampons without applicators, reusable homemade pads.............makes you think!
