Lovely cute little I Ching Book. It's really small... perfect for a stocking stuffer or I Ching student traveler. I Ching divinations on the go you say? Why yes... of course. (Try on, I bet you make a new friend in 5 minutes.). This little guy is packed with info, and remember, you can NEVER have enough different books on the I Ching. ;-)

The translation makes no sense whatsoever. There are grammar errors throughout and the translator appears to have translated word for word with no consideration to making the end result readable or understandable. Also, the book is incredibly tiny. Much smaller than any "pocket" book I've ever had before.

As others here note, this is a handy reference for the experienced user. Beginners would do better with Hilary Barrett, or perhaps R. L Wing or Carol Anthony (among others).Shambhala shows a publication date of 1992; I suspect this is a much earlier work by Cleary, who's reputation rests on clear and accurate translation rather than poetic indulgence. The text here -- the source of which is never stated -- is rather clunky and obtuse, recounting the Confucian epigrammatic description, judgment, and image for each of the 64 hexagrams along with commentaries on the changing lines. Those generally familiar with the I Ching will soon be at home with this bare-bones political manual stripped of Victorian-era sentimentality (via to Legge and Wilhelm) and pop-psychological/new age fluffiness (thanks to latter-day Jungians), and might gain some useful insights. New users will be less than edified by commentaries such as "If you fasten something with the hide of a yellow ox, nothing can unloosen it."The introductory text, though insightful, seems to be written for academics; the book ends with a "List of Hexagrams with their Primal Correlates and Structural Complements." What this means and why the reader should care is not explained. In sum: It is indeed a handy pocket guide for those who (like me) cogitate on hexagrams and do an occasional cast throughout the day, and like to have a concise source-book on hand. Beginners would do well to build their libraries on more accessible texts before acquiring this one.

been consulting the I Ching over the years and find the insights thoughtful and helpful .... can be a positive tool for life and enjoyment. Makes one a little less compulsive.

I mean really!!! It's the I CHING! I love the size as the person I purchased it for can carry in his pocket

A great pocket size version of this book. I have several copies of different sizes and different translations. This one is best for travel and being on the go because of its size.

This book works with both bamboo I-Ching sticks and with coins. It is small but mighty.

It is very much pocket sized, and I love that. It is interesting in itself once you figure out how to use it, and once again, it is awesomely little.

Well we needed this for an in-depth literature class, and the book itself is fine, it's just that the printing of the cover went haywire, so part of the top is cut off and the bottom has a white area- like it was shifted up during printing.

The recreation of ancient cultures serves as a favorite vehiclefor Rosemary Sutcliff, who has portrayed the ancient Celts and Romans in Britain. In this YA book she has swept away the mists of Avalon, thus allowing her readers the delightful privilege of observing the gradual creation of Arthuriana. Drawing upon an eclectic source base for inspiration she weaves a tapestry which mesmerizes those who admired the Golden Age which briefly flowered between the Rome and the true Dark Ages. Our favorite heroes move and breathe once more as the ancienttales are spun out to their inevitable conclusion. Less a cohesive novel with clearly-defined plot and character development, this book is more an anthology with overlapping characters and dreams or goals, centered around Arthur's immortal, chivalric brotherhood. Once again we admireMerlin, Arthur, Guinivere, Lancelot, Tristan, Percival, Sir Gawain, the kitchen Knight and others from medieval leis. Their ladies remind usof the strict rules of Courtly Love. These various protagonists have their turn in the spotlight of adventure: both militant and amorous. They must joust with their enemies, mortal and otherwise, or even worse: wrestle with their own private passions, fears and prophecies. Pervading these dozen stories is the universal theme of Magic:the dark variety as wielded by Arthur's arch enemy, his half-sister, Morgan la Fey; and the White magic of Merlin and the lady Nimue. The ultimate destruction of Camelot by Mordred is merely hinted at, but enchantments of various kinds cause many valiant knights to stumble into sin, regardless of the fact that the dire consequences are not immediately manifest. Time and again this evil half-sister lurks in the background, weaving her dark arts to cause Arthur's ruin. When she is unable to attack him directly, she uses unwitting mortals to work her implacable will. Fortunately in this collection she only succeeds sporadically, temporarily, but the shadow of of her destruction haunts Arthur throughout his reign. In addition to the obvious forces of Good and Evil Sutcliff presents mystic elements: the coming of Excalibur, Merlin's final rest beneath the hawthorn tree, the Table Round with its Chairs which are magically emblazoned in gold lettering, as new champions emerge from legend to join the famed brotherhood. Yet perhaps an even greater force of magic, if you will, is demonstrated by the odyssey of the human heart.Philosophically recognizing that the heart chooses where it will--regardless of social mores and common sense--Sutliff's lovers are plagued with poor timing, faulty judgment, as well as magical potions or spells working against them. These famous pairs inevitably succumb to their forbidden or unbidden passions--few with happy results. Sutcliff's style immediately engages our compassion and concern for their success, although we understand full well the contradictory moral implications. Perhaps relying on readers' familiarity with movie and musical versions of CAMELOT, the author chose not to conclude her Arthurian saga with the violent desecration of the Table Round as a result of the famous romantic triangle and ensuing civil war. Instead she leaves us thegentle, joyous legacy of the Shining Time, which has captured the imagination of people the world over for centuries. Fantasy, Dream or wishful Fiction: let the mists swirl as Excalibur rising from the Lake, and may mankind take heart in the glories of Britain's Past.

There are countless retellings and adaptations concerning the life and times of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and I'm not even close to having read all of them. Therefore, it's impossible for me to say that Rosemary Sutcliffe's version is the definitive Arthurian retelling. However, it's certainly one of the best. Told in Sutcliffe's graceful prose that is both epic and intimate when need-be, and the tricky subjects like incest, adultery and bloodshed are conveyed without being either too prudish or overly graphic. This first installment in her "King Arthur trilogy" is thicker than the next two books combined, and Sutcliffe draws on a wide range of sources with which to build her own narrative. Beginning with Merlin's boyhood and his activities at Tintagel, Sutcliffe goes on to the circumstances of Arthur's birth as outlined in Geoffrey Monmouth's The History of the Kings of Britain, giving us her account of his birth, fosterage, and eventual crowning when only just fifteen. From Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur she brings in the love triangle between Arthur, Lancelot and Guenever, Arthur's struggle to establish peace in Britain, and the forming of the Knights of the Round Table. From this point, Sutcliffe moves into several other stories concerning the Knights of the Round Table, including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (the most famous translation by Tolkien: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Sir Orfeo) the Kitchen Knight (also one of my favourite picture books by Trina Schart Hyman: The Kitchen Knight: A Tale of King Arthur) and perhaps the best rendering of the tale of Tristan and Iseult there is (it almost deserves to be its own book).Merlin and Morgan le Fey drop out of the story surprisingly quickly, and most of it is concerned with knight's errands and love stories, most of which can be read out of order, for this is not a novel so much as it is a compilation of stories. It can be rather difficult at times to keep track of all the interwoven stories that double-back and twist about and get steadily more complex as each chapter goes on."The Sword and the Circle" is followed by two sequels, "The Light Beyond the Forest," which recounts the search for the Holy Grail, and "The Road to Camlann" which concludes the trilogy with the destruction of Camelot and the disbandment of the Knights of the Round Table. I'd recommend tracking down the three-in-one version: King Arthur Stories. The amount of story that Sutcliffe is trying to get across means that characterization beyond broad brushstrokes is minimum, and often motivation is completely lost, but what she still manages to skillfully convey the depth of human emotion that is so prevalent in these legends: the longing for the divine, the pain of love, and the mindlessness of hate. Arthur is perfectly portrayed as a man who rises to status of beloved ruler not through physical prowess, but his strength of leadership and his ability to create peaceful resolutions. Yet I got the sense that Sutcliffe was more interested in Lancelot, what with his twisted face and passionate heart. There are probably more pages dedicated to him than any other character in the entire trilogy. She also crafts the unforgettable images of Arthurian legend that seem to be known to everyone: the sword in the anvil in the churchyard, the white hand in the lake clutching Excalibur, the hall of the Round Table, the byre of Elaine floating down the river outside Camelot, Merlin sleeping under the Hawthorn tree...the list goes on, and all of it is encapsulated in her rendering of medieval Britain: the dark forests and cool lakes, standing stones and mysterious wells, castles and hermitages.Sutcliffe has created a very "pure" vision of the Arthurian story, in comparison the revisionist treatments that many authors use on the legends today (usually by giving them a feminist slant). But here we have a sense of the original story, much like the retellings/compilations by Roger Lancelyn Green and Howard Pyle, in which the knights: "take oaths that always they would defend the right, that they would be the true servants and protectors of all women, and deal justly in all things with all men, that they would strive always for the good of the kingdom of Britain and the glory of the kingdom of Logres, and that they would keep faith with each other and with God."

In these legends little seems fixed: I had read in several other versions that Morgan Le Fay , the younger sister of Arthur was the mother of Modredand that he was fostered by the older sister in Orkney. It gives motivation to Morgan's many attempts on Arthur's life. The stories are pleasantly retold here with very little real damageto them. The name shifting is common from one tale to the next with only the main characters keeping identity. The description of Lancelot as ugly is new to me, too.Mostly he is talked about as a very big man who could move very fast andwas very well trained in Knightly arts of lance and sword. Most talk about his true heart more than his features. It does give a new twist to the tales.

The author tries to touch a delicate theme as religion, failing miserably. The main character doesn’t keep his tough role and in some parts is actually strange, being considered a Demon Lord and a God. Talking about the real Demon Lord, which is such an important character is not mentioned or developed anymore through this book, hopefully this story line will be retaken in the next book.

If nothing else it just goes to show that there is alot more instore for diablo on the horizon. I felt this volume had alot more setup in it for some very interesting things concerning the world the game that was based on it. And of course the holy symbol and the King still need to be explained. Onward to the next volume.

If I'm honest, this book made me laugh more than anything else, as the Demon Lord continues to inadvertently screw things up/correct them simultaneously quite a bit. Some nice/ecchi moments with some characters definitely keep things lighthearted. If you like the series, you won't be disappointed!

It seems one of the characters gets leveled up and was willing to pay the price, the unexpected part was the surprising appearance of a benevolent goddess.

A great series by a great author can't wait for next book to come out. Keep up the good work!

It really felt like the plot was moving forward, and, unlike some books, it didn't feel like a bloated outline.

Liked the way it resolved the previous arc and set up the next. Great development for newer characters. Great humor.

Good read. Good action cannotCan't wait to see what happens in the next installment of how not to summon a demon lord

The Lies that Bind is an important book about an obviously important topic. Not many topics are discussed as often as identity but Kwame Appiah is still able to bring a fresh perspective to the subject all the while writing with clarity and in a style which can be understood by academics and non-academics alike. I happen to disagree with many of the conclusions but I will try to focus this review more on what the author wanted to say and less on my particular reactions.Appiah first recognizes the enormous importance given to issues of identity in the modern world. These identities— whether racial, religious, national or cultural—tend to be viewed through an essentialist lens: they are real things that express themselves in individuals.Appiah rightly dismantles the essentialist account. Instead he offers his own theory that identities are merely labels which correspond with certain expected behaviors and certain expected treatment by others. One can try to change these norms but the labels are shared by a wider community and so ultimately one must persuade the wider public that a change in attitude is necessary. (A recent example of this is society’s change in attitude towards homosexuals.)To accomplish this dismantling Appiah advances example upon example of the fluidity of identity labels. While gender may be appear to be binary there are in fact many intersex people. While we tend to view religions as creeds there are many different beliefs within one community. And while people do have different skin colors there is no such thing as a race. The problem with this dismantling is that Appiah oversimplifies the construction of these identities. While genetic aberrations may occur that make some people not fully biologically male or female this doesn’t prove that gender is a mere label anymore than any other genetic malfunction causes humanity to lack a certain characteristic. And while, in the wake of the Protestant Reformation, many churches began stressing their respective creeds, the example of many beliefs within one faith community does not prove that there are no core teachings any more than the fact that libertarians disagree on drug legalization proves that libertarians do not have an essential belief towards limited government. Finally, the idea that race as reported by the census bureau is largely a social construct does not mean that genetic differences don’t exist between different peoples around the world that can partially explain differences in culture. In short, while not an essentialist, I simply don’t agree that all identities are merely labels with no core meaning whatsoever. While sympathetic to Appiah’s defense of those marginalized by identity, I do not believe that all identities are lies which bind. Some identities are meaningful though Appiah’s deconstructions are worth considering before opting for a very rigid notion of identity.Wonderfully written with a sincere effort to provoke thought and better the world I do recommend this book to all even though I must disagree with some of its major conclusions.

I enjoy books written by philosophers for a general audience because they usually demonstrate such clear thinking. That is certainly the case with this book and the author has taken on an important and somewhat sensitive topic. He does an outstanding job of showing how the identities we take on are flawed and full of contradictions. We often have little in common with those with whom we identify . Therefore the title "The Lies That Bind". Interestingly enough though the author admits these identities are necessary for us to function well in society. I think the importance in this book and especially at this time lies in the fact that it so clearly emphasizes that we need to stop using identity as if everyone who takes on that identity has the same experiences, circumstances, or goals. That's the problem with the current identity politics. It doesn't recognize the fact that in the end we are all individuals. Highly recommended!

I found this book disappointing. Appiah tells piles and piles and piles of stories, many interesting and entertaining, but what does it all add up to? The storytelling doesn't lead to conclusions that are developed to any significant degree. The first chapter is the most philosophical, but odd as a starting point. Appiah buys into anti-essentialism about sex and gender and then proposes the same view about color, country, culture, class, etc. But anti-essentialism about sex is pretty controversial and dubious (the usual arguments about intersex states are repeated uncritically by Appiah, and easily challenged). By contrast, anti-essentialism about country, culture, and class are much more evident and plausible. So what did the consideration of sex buy the author? And as to color, what conclusions about race can really be drawn from what we say about sex? Arguably, sex and race are different phenomena, in need of very different arguments. At the end of book, one expects a full chapter developing the ideas of the title. Is identity really a "lie"? Does it "bind" in the sense of being constricting? Does it "bind" in the sense of creating community? All that story-telling, chapter after chapter, and yet no, we never come to much of a pay off. There are few pages at the end, mostly in a mere "coda", as if these topics were an afterthought. But not the careful, full discussion you would expect from an eminent philosopher who has written academic books on identity. It's as if the author bumped up against his publisher's deadline and didn't have time to finish the book.Appiah is incredibly erudite and a fantastic writer. Hence, three stars. But beware--don't read if you're looking for an exploration of identity, but only if you want to read some great stories about various identities.

The book main thesis is that the clustering of people by their religion, nation, race, class etc. is based on quite confused ideas. Unless one believes in the Aristotelian idea of natural kinds this thesis is not amazing. But I enjoyed reading the book since it includes many interesting facts that refute common expectations in regards to our identities.

A timely and erudite inquiry into the forces driving identity politics - class, creed, race, etc.. Appiah nonetheless seems to be reluctant to draw any conclusions - perhaps for fear of giving offense. I had hoped to learn more about Appiah's philosophy of "cosmopolitanism", but came away with little more than platitudes about "tolerance is good".

My admiration for this author/chef knows no limits. Really. I've been cooking out of Ottolenghi's "Plenty" cookbook for the past year or so at least twice a week and it's changed the family's eating habits and appreciation of good taste astronomically. So when this newly published cookbook (from the restaurant menu) was published in the U.S., I was interested. At the same time, I wondered how the newbie could improve and/or expand on the author's two previous (and terrific) books. I shouldn't have been the least bit skeptical. "Ottolenghi" is even better than its predecessors and chock-a-block full of great new food.I come to this opinion from the perspective of someone who cooks almost exclusively vegetarian dishes. "Ottolenghi" is about two-thirds non-meat in content. Lots of terrific new vegetable entrees and sides, with the usual emphasis on freshness, herbs, nuts and Middle East/Mediterranean spices. What's really new in the author's approach in this cookbook is a generous section on desserts (most of them adaptations of classics) and many recipes for sauces that can be used with a lot of different entrees or as dips, spreads, etc.I'm just getting started in using this new book--and in fact started with dessert! How does chocolate chestnut bar sound? A kind of exotic brownie, but richer and creamier than the traditional approach. Killer taste. The same chapter includes a fine recipe for a more traditional brownie, but clearly better, judging from the ingredients.I'm a total fan of this guy and his books and have been giving them as gifts for the past year. I even gave one to a Moroccan friend who is a wonderful cook, but who became an instant admirer and regular user of Ottolengthi's "Plenty". So get the new one or at least one of the earlier books--it/they will change your life.

All the recipes I have tried from this cookbook are simply DELICIOUS! They are also easy to make, the ingredients are relatively easy to find (you do need to go to an Arab store for Sumac and Zaatar for example...but as I see it, that's part of the adventure!). The results are wonderful: the food looks and tastes deliciously...the flavors are simple and yet blend wonderfully to create something "wow"!!! I shared the Cauliflower fritters with friends and they were quite impressed at the work of my hands!! ;) (and I'm just a beginner cooking "aficionada" -I let them believe I know how to cook of course - but I love eating well and prefer cooking than eating out...I want to know what's in my food!!). I was selecting the recipes for this week (after finishing my yummy red bell pepper soup and I said to myself that I needed to share my review with others because this cookbook has given me several happy moments!). Buen Provecho!!! :-)

I am obsessed with this cookbook. I love it so much that I bought two more copies for my best friends for Christmas. The recipes are healthy, fresh, unique and incredibly delicious. They aren't too hard to make if you're a moderately experienced cook. If you love interesting food and hate getting stuck in a flavor rut, this book with break your mold in an awesome way. The beet salad is to die for!

Yotam Ottolenghi puts together phenomenal cookbooks; his recipes are simple but elegant, using fresh vegetables (and in some cases meat) in new ways that adds a new spark to the ho hum vegetarian cookbooks that are out there. He has won awards for his first cookbook "Jerusalem" and all three of his later books are equally as good and innovative in their recipes and simplicity.Plus the book has a coating so it wipes clean after use - how awesome is that!!

Favorite. cookbook. ever. Every recipe comes out exactly as expected, which is delicious, and healthy to boot. It's so tempting to say I threw the recipe together myself when guests rave, but they wouldn't believe me. And I could never miss an opportunity to turn someone onto the genius that is Ottolenghi. Flavors are mediterranean. Common ingredients are pine nuts, cilantro, flat-leaf parsley, lemon, cinnamon, many other curious but savory combinations.

Every recipe is a huge hit! Sometimes the ingredients or ingredient combination sounds odd but trust the recipes because they always come out great. My daughter is only five and loves picking new recipes for me to try. I also get pushed out of my 'comfort zone' but using ingredients I have never used or even heard of before. Also, it gives descriptions on the not so common ingredients and other things that are very useful! Great for a cook or baker at any level. I never feel confused or in over my head because there are pages of tips and help as well as very easy to follow recipes. The only thing is make sure you have a measurement conversion table or app because it used all types :)

The recipes didn't seem as appealing to me but having started collecting all the Yotam books This was a nice add to my collection. But stick with the Plenty books for some easier to follow recipes.

He is a brilliant chef and this book provides a wonderful collection of fantastic recipes. I have prepared many of his recipes from a number of his cookbooks. I have his favorite ingredients in my cupboard. The recipes are for the most part easy to prepare and when challenging they are worth the extra effort. I recommend any of his books.

Jungle: A Photicular Book

From School Library Journal

Gr 3 Up—Kainen, author of several "Photicular" titles (including Safari and Ocean), wows readers yet again with gorgeous, rippling photos of jungle creatures. A monkey, a snake, a tiger, and a very realistic tarantula all seem to move across the page thanks to the unique photicular images. Wollard, who contributed to the dynamic text, brings even more life to the page with her descriptions of each animal and its connection to its ecosystem. The vibrant photos will make this a highly engaging title for individual and group use. As with other interactive books, the pages may take a beating, and that is something to consider before purchasing. The images are energetic, and the text is informative and interesting. VERDICT This would make a great fit for collections that serve animal lovers and those who can't get enough of the "Photicular" books.—Sarah Knutson, American Canyon Middle School, CA

This book is absolutely AMAZING! As you turn the pages the pictures "come to life" as if you are watching a short video!Normally when I purchase a gift on Amazon I just have them wrap it and send the gift directly to the person, but as a Christmas present I bought a few of these "Photicular" books and wanted to wrap them myself..I was simply amazed when I looked through it! Even my Husband had to come over and see for himself. Not only would I recommend these as a gift, I would suggest having them be delivered to you first so you can enjoy them before you give them away! 😍

My 15-month-old grandson loves this book. It keeps his attention and delights him everytime he reads it. This one, I think, is better than the Safari book because the animals in this Jungle book do more interesting things, like blinking eyes, chewing, scratching, whereas the Safari book basically shows animals walking and running.

Bought this book for my 18-month-old niece and it's a great book. A tad bit on the expensive side given that there is less than 10 pages. But the effects on the book is wondrous. I, myself, was mesmerized when I first looked at this book the first day I got it.Probably would not buy anything like this again since it is a bit too expensive for me.

My son has the Ocean photicular book. His cousin saw it and loved it, so I bought him this one for his birthday! It's nice to buy kids something other than toys that they love and will learn from.

I first purchased 1 of these books at COSTCO. The children enjoyed them so much that I purchased 2 more for my grandchildren. The pictures are fun for any age. The information regarding each critter is for 5th grade up, but I think the very young can keep these in their library until they learn to read better.

Bought one of these for a last minute gift that was very well received. When I had a chance to review this book, I bought two more. Awesome!

I love the pictures. But way too much info to read thru, would have preferred key points. Most kids flip thru the picture and forget about reading since it's too much info.

Saw one of these in the Dentist waiting room. Fascinated me - so I was sure that my grandkids would like it! They did! The younger ones were amazed by the 'moving' images, and the older one also enjoyed reading.
