His fertile theological mind worked diligently to separate Christianity in England from the Roman curia. Cranmer wrote tracts, books, and sermons on the subject of royal supremacy of the church. He invented the beloved "Book of Common Prayer" of 1549 and its first revision of 1552. With king Edward VI's blessing Cranmer founded the Church of England. In the end Cranmer found martyrdom on Queen Mary's chopping block.Cranmer's professional and personal trials and tribulations are reviewed. One learns of his family history, his marriage to Margaret of Nuremberg, his short family legacy (his son and daughter did not carry his family line), and the whereabouts of his vast library after his 1556 death. I took "Thomas Cranmer" on in order to make sense of a seeming paradox: What I already "knew" of him did not square with the theology I had begun to discover in his Collects and Prayer Book. I was curious!MacCulloch does a masterful job at presenting this complex, and sometimes contradictory figure of the early English Reformation. Despite the derrogatory review given by "a reader," I found very little bias and no axe-grinding in this work. Actually, I came to the book expecting some bias. Even being thusly prepared and properly skeptical, I found only a very few times that MacCulloch let his own opinions show through. (When he does, it is in parentheses with exclamation points!!) You can almost hear him chuckle at times.I read the book in 9 or 10 days, and never found it to be a chore; in fact, the most difficult thing was putting it down and going to bed! While the book is scholarly, and masterfully written, it is definitely not tedious or boring.I came to the end of the book with a deep respect for Cranmer. I have many points of disagreement with him, and yet a certain admiration for his eventual willingness to heroically stand where he believed the Gospel compelled him to stand. Fr. James DeKoven, an early Anglican theological hero in Wisconsin, once said "We live at a time when cowardice in matters of religion has been elevated to the status of virtue." Archbishop Thomas Cranmer proved, in the end, to be anything but a coward.I have corresponded several times now with Professor MacCulloch, and find him to be humble, dedicated, and helpful. I am now reading his "The Reformation: a history," and I plan to read everything else of his that I can get my hands on!

This is a very scholarly work, but I would not recommend it for beginners in Tudor Britain. However, if you have read past all the "superficial" works and are ready to "dig down to the nitty-gritty", then this is definitely the book for you on Cranmer. My humble suggestion: Read the popular books on Henry III's reign, stay away from the "romantic novels" of the time. If you are still wanting to dig, do some basic readings on Cromwell and More before you tackle this one. However, if you are sufficiently prepared, be ready to enjoy a very thorough account of one of King Harry's most trusted advisers. Very good book, but prerequisites are highly recommended.

Majestic. It's not just Cranmer; it's England and the Reformation. It's the experience of it all. A must read.

Written in 1994, this book just becomes an introduction to any divers who want to visit Guam and Yap. Maybe excellent reading at the coffee shop, but I recommend doing more research before traveling to these locations. Not enough is written, although the series of LONELY PLANET tries to be comprehensive. Occasionally, from book to book, one coverage seems to out rank the other. This book can be light on providing necessary data, and is certainly not current. Funny thing, I like the book for what it has to offer. Book is well organized. It shows dive sites, and says if advanced, intermediate, beginner. And, yes, if also good for snorkeling. Yet, it appears there are fewer dive sites listed. That is because in 1994 there were not many discovered ? Maybe ? To me the heyday of MTV was when it played videos around the clock, and this book is chock full of behind the scenes info of many singers who were hot and happening then (and in some cases even still very popular now) like Madonna, Heart, Robert Palmer, A-Ha, Michael Jackson, and many more. If you love the 80's or you want to know about what MTV was like back in the day or you just like reading entertaining books...get this book. As someone who was an 80's child, I can tell you that this book was well worth the money. The pages flew by, and I wouldn't hesitate to read this again some day.

I've seen others online mention that "I Want My MTV" is more a history of the music video than the story of MTV itself. That's a fair assessment as there are long stretches of the book where the discussion is entirely focused on the music videos and artists themselves with any connection to MTV being tangential at best.Having said that, this book is FANTASTIC. There are so many great stories in here that the book is really hard to put down. If you're a child of the music video era like I am, this is a must-read. My family got MTV very early in 1982 and for a few years after, it served as a de facto radio station for our house. It was pretty much always on. So this book and the videos discussed really connected with me.It's worth noting, as others have, that a lot of the stories deal with sex and drugs and have a very tabloid-y feel. Given the "Uncensored" part of the title and the general subject (rock & roll), that should not surprise you. Occasionally it feels like the author dove a little too deep into that type of story but it never really goes overboard.Bottom line: Buy the book, you won't be sorry.

It focuses purely on MTV's 1981-1993 music video era. A looong read, yet my only beef is that I didn't want it to end.Wish there were more said on Beavis & Butthead, MTV rivals like The Box, MTV2, and post 1993 MTV - but this still qualifies as the definitive MTV guide. Get it, you'll love it. Skip a couple chapters on 80's metal videos like I did.

After reading "I Want My MTV", I must say that I am profoundly embarrassed over my musical choices. The videos of the early eighties influenced me to listen to crappy music. The chapters concerning Madonna and poor Billy Squire were not surprising, but incredibly insightful. The book does a fantastic job of illustrating why MTV was successful, why certain videos were shown over and over again and why the cable station had to abandon their original format of playing videos. The book was particularly harsh to Downtown Judy Brown, but I enjoyed her antics. Buy this book. 587 pages was not enough.

Great read for anyone who is a child of the 80s MTV generation. Great insight and insider info. behind the scenes on the whole music video revolution that was MTV. Wish MTV would have stayed the same as it was back then instead of turning into a reality network but that is not applicable here.

As a nonfiction author and a marketer, I’ve always tried to keep my reader in the forefront of my thoughts while writing. In Writing to Be Understood, Anne Janzer makes an excellent case for really getting into the head of your audience, losing jargon and using stories to engage and inform. An excellent guide to writing with the goal of being clearly understood and to reach even those on the opposite side of the discussion. I highlighted a lot in this one so I can go back to key thoughts.

I started reading this book with the hope that I would pick up some tips for writing non-fiction. I got all the tips I had hoped for, and much more. It's a living example of writing to be understood. Janzer takes insights from natural and social science, mashes them up with insights from marketing, and adds a hefty dose of common sense, with a dash of good humor.I often read a book, particularly one that is this interesting, in one or two sittings. Here I kept willing myself to stop after each chapter, taking notes on insights that are particularly useful to my writing practice, and then thinking about her advice to writers while I was doing the dishes, taking a walk, or running errands. I suspect that I'll be returning to the book over time to give myself a refresher on the concepts and tips she shares with her readers.This book is a terrific read and a valuable resource for anyone who writes about complicated subjects (that would be most writers), and particularly for writers of non-fiction books, reports, scientific papers, academic journals and textbooks.

Writing a book about writing is one of these peculiar areas where the reader gets to evaluate immediately if the author knows what they are talking about. Luckily Anne does. This is a very theoretical book -- and I mean that in the best possible way. Its hard to see a writer not benefiting from reading the book, but I think it holds a particular benefit for experienced writers. The book asks you to ask "what am I writing, and why." The book contains all types of examples that I was completely unaware of that drive the points home. The book is unique in the way that it keeps altering the perspective of your analysis. It seems like a journey as you are pushed back and forth like a rubber band, all of it serves to make you question your assumptions. I have to say; I have never as a long time author even considered many of the concepts presented in the book. This book falls into the category of a must-read for writers.

I read this book in preparation for writing a book of my own. I've already written a book, but I know my writing could always be better.Anne is a master of communication, and really provides specific, easy-to-implement techniques that will help any writer be a better writer. I like her idea of focusing on a few key readers, and thinking about the intersection between "what I have to teach" and "what they want to learn". It can be so tempting to just focus on what I've been learning and not on the mindset of the reader. I had never thought about the idea of "empathy for the reader" but she's right--it's a really important concept. I also loved the idea that what makes you a good speaker can help you be a better writer--as someone who does both, that was a thought-provoking concept.Side note--this is the first book I've ever read that used a flush toilet as a metaphor (page 48 of 206) and it was perfect.If you want to communicate more effectively with your audience, you should buy this book. Read it in one sitting, and then review it for a few minutes each time you prepare to write. Your readers will thank you.

This book has totally helped me move forward --- I have been writing my book for the past 2 years and this has taken my writing to a whole new level ... I highly recommend this book to newbies and seasoned writers alike !!!The author obviously uses the techniques she writes about because I was totally engaged the entire time ... couldn't put it down as I felt myself learning something new on every page. Anne's book covers this and a lot more!I'll elaborate on just one aspect. The title and introduction are key in any writing because they draw the reader in and keep them engaged to read the rest of the article. The common advice we hear is 'make the title interesting' - huh! like we didn't know that. But Anne's approach is entirely different - it is specific enough to give you what you need but not too detailed to look highly prescriptive. For example, about titles she explains that a title must either 'spark curiosity' or 'hint at a benefit'. Now that's specific enough to actually let me frame the title but not too prescriptive to force one down a specific path.Likewise there are many other excellent suggestions that provide the framework and guidelines for overcoming the writing challenges we face as B2B marketers. The book is highly engaging and brings forth perspectives from many experts in various aspects/fields.I write and also hire people who write. From now onwards my first interview question will be "Have you read Anne Janzer's book?".Get her book, apply what you read, you will be thankful that you did.

Seriously, if you are the kind of person who needs to understand where things came from to really understand them, this is a great book. It is truly a book on code, and not just "how to code" or "what to do with code" but "what on earth is code" and where did it come from. It explains computers and computing in more usable terms than more technical books on the same subject because it focuses on history and scope rather than technical depth. For a reader like me, who asked every teacher from elementary school through college "why do we count to 10" and clung to the best answer of "it's arbitrary - it's just how it's always been done" until reading this book (and who struggled to convert binary to base ten), this book was gold. Pure gold.

I'm an electronics engineer so basically I was not expecting to find much new stuff of this book when I first browsed the table of contents, however after some reading I've got to love it very quickly. Yeah, chances are that most of the devices described along the pages are familiar to many people, specially for those with education in engineering, but the way this book takes you from one to the next is as natural that new relationships start to be apparent right away and then, you finally got it !!. This book is a very nice mix of technical and historical, it will use your interest in electronics to tell you the whole story from the Morse code to the microprocessor. As I read I learned more about the many difficulties that our peers from the past had to deal with to solve their problems and, ultimately, create the technology of today.

Okay, so I'm only 30 pages into this book but I'm hooked. I started taking evening IT classes to get into a different career and ran into some issues in my A+ certification went they kept using volts, amperes and other terms that I only had a vague idea of what they meant. This book gave me a more solid understanding of these terms, so much so I saved a friend $85 dollars that he was about spent on a starter for his car. I saw immediately that the cable wire attached to the battery was missing a few inches of electrical tape, leaving the copper exposed. This book taught me that electricity does not ran very well through air, so we went to Auto Zone and bought some electrical tape to cover the exposed areas, making sure enough electricity is getting to the battery. I didn't think it was going to work but the car started right up! For a noob like me this was a big deal. This author created a strong interest in me for chemistry, which would of been real helpful years ago but oh well. I enjoyed his intro into Morse code and Brail as it felt he was conditioning readers to grasp idea how computers received and process information. Brail was very interesting as he pointed out how certain markers will alert a blind person to cease interpreting letters and switch over to numbers, than another nullifier to switch back to letters.

This walked me through computers from concept to how the circuits work to how the different components work together. Very helpful for me, an adult who didn't grow up with computers, to understand how they actually work. Interesting for those who want to know the nitty-gritty details of circuits and computers and why they work.

This is a good book. I am teaching a class and using this as the text. It's at a pretty good intro level and many of the students seem to like it a lot. I liked it because it's more of a novel than an actual text, it gives a good background to many of the topics I'm teaching, and I can go in depth into other topics and ideas that are related to the concepts described in the book. I don't cover the whole book and some of the chapters are harder to understand than others, but I do like the book overall.

Was looking for a book that could explain how a computer really works from scratch but never found one until I found this book thinking it’s just another typical computer book. This book is perfect explaining how computer works starting from hardware to software only for the beginner or someone who wants to know how exactly a computer works and the theory behind it. Wish I had read this book when it was published (year 2000).

From end to end, you begin at Morse code and eventually land on CPU schematics.

Using Amazon text book rental was awesome because they usually have much better prices and the book always arrives on time. I was worried about renting because I am the type of person who forgets to send it back then I pay more for it because of late fees. However, Amazon is great because they send constant reminder emails. They late me know they care but not having me spend more money but being late. They also paying for shipping it back. JUST REMEMBER TO KEEP THE BOX IT CAME IN SO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SEND IT BACK IN. Don;t waste your money buying a package if you have a perfectly good box you get it in.. Unless of course you have cats they and tear it up ;)

This book is very well researched. In fact too well researched. There is no narrative. It's like having to read 50 boring journal articles back to back (and you would think the subject would be interesting). I tried hard to pick up some pearls but felt frustrated chapter after chapter. The book, like a "lousy supervisor", lacks "an effective teaching strategy" which is a bit ironic.

Useful in my practice

I purchased this book as part of a graduate psychology course in supervision and consultation. I found this book to be immensely helpful due to its depth and the wide variety of issues covered. As a graduate student this book was essential while beginning the supervision process, additionally, as a practicing clinician it has continued to be very useful. This book is a bang for the buck!

Despite being published several years ago, this remains my go-to guide for all things supervision. I teach a "supervision of supervision" course and I have my students read this book to get a sense of the empirical and theoretical bases for decision making in their supervision practices.

I will use it as reference

At last a thorough guide to being a Clinical Supervisor. Although a bit dry to read at times the information is invaluable to anyone who is currently supervising or considering becoming a clinical supervisor.

Really uninteresting book which relies solely on dogmatic research about supervision. I can't believe I spent all that money on it. Not worth it in my honest opinion.
